40-Snaan
9-Bhavishya Puraan, 4-Uttar Parv-122-130, p 518-530

Maagh Snaan
(Chap 122) Krishn said - "People are very careless in Snaan in Kali Yug, still Maagh Snaan is a special Snaan, that is why I am telling you its method. One should note that, who have no Shraddhaa, are sinners, atheists, doubtful and argue only for argument sake do not get fruits of Teerth and Snaan etc. Wherever one wants to do Snaan, he should do it in the morning. All sins are washed away by taking bath before sunrise in Maagh Maas. Taking bath with warm water, Jap of a Manta without Gyaan, Shraaddh without Braahman, and taking food in the evening - all are useless.

There are four types of Snaan - Vaayavya (taking bath with cow's dust), Vaarun (taking bath in sea, river, or pond), Braahm (taking bath with Mantra) , and Divya (Divine - taking bath with rain water). Among them Vaarun Snaan is special Snaan. All kinds of people get fruits of Maagh Maas Snaan done in Teerth places. Braahman, Kshatriya and Vaishya should take bath with Mantra, while women and Shoodra should take bath without Mantra.

Who takes Snaan in Maagh Maas, he should live with control on his Indriyaan. He should take bath on 30 days while Sun is in Makar Raashi (Capricorn sign). On the first day itself one should take vow to take bath for the full month. One should go to take bath without covering oneself with any extra cloth. He should smear some mud on his forehead, offer Arghya to Soorya Dev, and do Tarpan of Pitar. After taking bath worship Vishnu Bhagavaan. According to one's capacity, one may do Havan daily and eat only once the whole month. Live with abstinence and sleep on the floor. In any emergency, whatever one can do he should do it, but one must take bath in the morning.

By using sesame seed Ubatan, bath with sesame seed water, Tarpan with sesame seed, Havan with sesame seed, food  made of sesame seed are never harmful. One should use fire to keep oneself warm in Teerth places. Donate oil and Aamalaa. After one month one should worship Braahman and give clothes, ornaments, food to him along with blanket, shoes etc saying "Maadhavah Preeyataam"."

Rudra Snaan
(Chap 124) Krishn said - "Listen to what Skand told Agastya Rishi about Rudra Snaan. Whose sons die in young age, who is barren, who is childless, or who gives birth only girls, she should do Rudra Snaan. On the day of Ashtamee (8th day), Chaturdashee (14th day) or Sunday, take bath methodically. Make a Mandap on a cow dung smeared place and an 8-petal lotus flower under that Mandap. In the middle of that flower's Karnikaa put an idol of Mahaadev, Paarvatee's idol on his left and Ganesh's idol on his right. Establish eight Lokpaal in eight petals. Then worship them. Establish four Kalsh in four corners of Mandap. In Aagneya direction (south-east), one should do Havan with Yaju Mantra (16 | 16) "Maa Nastokey Tanaye...". Make somebody do 11 Rudra Paath.

In the same way make another Mandp, make the woman seated in that Mandap, bathe her with those Kalash water. Later she should donate a golden cow, a cow, clothes, ornaments etc and feed Braahman. Who does this Vrat she becomes Subhaagyavatee, and has son also. This makes her sons kept alive after birth.

Grahan Snaan (Eclipse Bath)
(Chap 125) Krishn said - "Whoever man's sign is eclipse, this Snaan is important for him. On lunar eclipse, invite four Braahman for Swasti Vaachan and worship them with incense and flower garland etc. Get four pitchers, imagine four seas in them, and pray to Indra, Agni Dev, Yam Raaj, Nirriti Dev, Varun Dev, Vaayu Dev etc to eliminate all sorrows created by eclipse. On solar eclipse donate a ruby and on lunar eclipse donate a cow.

Dhyaan
Dhyaan means thinking about something or somebody. Here it means to think about Bhagavaan. Maarkandeya Rishi told Krishn that there are several types of Dhyaan. When one thinks about Bhagavaan with the feelings of kingdom, enjoyment, sleeping, food, ride, gems, woman, flower garland, clothes ornaments etc, it is called "Aadya Dhyaan". When one thinks about Him with the feelings of burning somebody, killing somebody, hitting somebody, cruelty, it is called anger produced "Raudra Dhyaan". When one thinks about Him with the feelings of Ved's meaning, controlling Indriyaan, attaining Moksh, welfare of the people, it is called "Saatwik Dhyaan". If one thinks about Him with the feeling of Indriyaan are satisfied with pleasures, not worrying about anybody's good or bad, and meditating upon Brahm with concentrated mind, it is called "Shukla Dhyaan".

Aadya Dhyaan gives Tiryak Yoni (lower species); Raudra Dhyaan gives Narak; Saatwik Dhyaan gives Swarg; and Shukla Dhyaan gives Moksh.

Ishtaa Poort
(Chap 127-129) Krishn Jee said - "Who dig ponds, small or large; wells, planting trees, building temples; and who helps in making them, such as architect, builders etc all go to Divine Lok by doing this Ishtaa Poort Dharm. Whoever living beings die while doing them, they also get Param Gati. As a son is known by his parents, in the same way the builder of these is known by his well, pond etc.

* Note - Ishtaa Poort word has been mentioned three times in three Parv in Bhavishya Puraan, and in Ved and other Puraan it has been mentioned several times. These are called "Antarvedee" and "Bahirvedee". Who builds ponds and wells, he uplifts even his ancestors. Among all of them building ponds, planting trees, and developing gardens  are considered the highest.

Deep Daan
(Chap 130) Yudhishthir asked - "Bhagavan, Which is that Vrat, Daan or Ta by doing which one gets very graceful body in the world?" Krishn said - "Once Pingal named Tapaswee was residing in Mathuraa Nagaree. Jaambvatee asked he same question from him, so listen to his answer to that question. He said - "On Sankraanti, solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, Vaidhriti and Vyatipaat Yog, Uttaraayan, Dakshinaayan, Vishuv, Ekaadashee, Shukla Chaturdashee, Tithi Kshaya, Sptamee and Ashtamee - one should take bath on these auspicious days, Vratee woman or man should donate Ghee pitcher and burning lamp to earth. This gives very graceful body."

Yudhishthir asked "Hey Madhusoodan, Who is the Devtaa of Earth?" Krishn said - "In earlier times, in he beginning of Sat Yug, there was a Soorya Vanshee king named Trishanku who wanted to go to Swarg with his physical body. But Maharshi Vashishth turned him into a Chaandaal. Trishnaku got very sad at this and he said his saga to Vishwaamitra Jee. Angry at this Vishwaamitra started created another world. He created many animals, trees, new Saptarshi, new Devtaa idols etc etc. At that time Indra prayed him to stop the new creation and suggested to do Deep Daan. Whatever idols he built, all Brahmaa, Vishnu, Mahesh etc lived in them; and the same live and accept Naivedya in this Mrityu Lok; and bestow Vardaan too. The same are called Bhoomi (Prithvi) Dev. That is why one should do Deep Daan in front of them.

For Soorya it should be red cloth Vartikaa (wick) and is called "Poornvarti".
For Shiv it should be white cloth Vartikaa and is called "Eeshwarvarti".
For Vishnu, it should be yellow cloth Vartikaa and is called "Bhogvarti".
For Gauree, it should be Kusum colored Vartikaa and is called "Saubhaagyavarti".
For Durgaa it should be deep brownish red Vartikaa and is called "Poornvartikaa".
For Brahmaa, it should be Pradatt Vartikaa and is called "Padmvarti".
For Naag it should be Pradatt Vartikaa, and is called "Naagvarti".
For Graha (planets) it should be Pradatt Vartikaa and is called "Pradatt Vartikaa".

First one should worship Devtaa, then do Deep Daan by filling a large pot with Ghee. As Deep lights, the person also spreads his lights around. Lamp should be lit in Ghee or oil, not from meat fat etc. Burning lamp should not be put out, nor it should be removed from its original place. Now you listen to a story in relation to the importance of Deep Daan.

A king named Chitrarath lived in Vidarbh Desh. He had several sons and one daughter whose name was Lalitaa. The king married her to a good king Chaarudharmaa. She used to light thousands of lamps in Vishnu temple, especially in Aashwin and Kaarttik months. She used to do Deep Daan on cross squares of city, in temples, near Peepal trees, where cow live, on banks of rivers, at wells, etc. Once the king's other wives asked her - "Lalitaa, tell us why do you do Deep Daan in comparison to worship Devtaa?" Lalitaa said - "Neither I have any complain to you, nor I am jealous with you, that is why I tell you he importance of Deep Daan. Brahmaa Jee sent Paarvatee Jee to Madra Desh in the form of Devikaa River. She destroys all sins. If anybody takes bath even once, he becomes Shiv's Gan. There is a Teerth there named Narasinh Teerth where Vishnu Himself took bath in the form of Narasinh form.

There was a king named Sauveer whose Purohit was Maitreya. The king built a temple on the banks of Devikaa River. Maitreya Jee used to worship and to do Deep Daan in that temple daily. Once he was celebrating Deep Daan occasion on Kaartik Poornimaa, that all got slept in the night. I was living there in the form of a mice. I felt a desire to eat the Ghritvartikaa of lamp. The then I heard the sound of a cat. I dropped the Vartikaa and hid myself. The lamp did not put out and it continued to light. After some time I died. After that I took birth as the daughter of king Chitrarath of Vidarbh Desh and got married to king Chaarudharmaa. This is the fruit of Deep Daan in Kaarttik Maas. Because I was a mice, I did not have any intention of Deep Daan still a Deep lit because of my fear, this is its result only that I am the chief queen and I remember my previous life. I know the importance of Deep Daan, that is why I do this daily." Then they also started Deep Daan ans in the end they all went to Vishnu Lok with their husband.
