Matsya Puraan is the 16th Puraan in the row of 18 major Puraan. This Puraan describes Vishnu's Matsya Avataar Kathaa that is why its name is Matsya Puraan. Matsya means Meen, or Machhalee (fish). It is also named like this because it was first recited by Vishnu himself, while He appeared in his incarnation of a Fish. It contains 14,000 Shlok (verses) and these verses are divided among 291 Adhyaaya (chapters). This is supposed to have been taught by Vishnu in his Matsya Avataar. Stories of Kach and Devayaanee, Yayati and Puru, are described. Various Vrat (fasts), Daan (gifts), holy places and rivers are also mentioned. Even mundane subjects like building construction are explained.
