12-Purushottam Kshetra-1
6-Naarad Puraan, 2-Uttar Bhaag, p 679-691

Uttar Bhaag of Naarad Puraan (p 577-750, about 175 pages) contains many stories - Rukmaangad, Indradyumn, Raam, Parashuraam, Krishn, glory of Gayaa and Gangaa, importance of Teerth

Purushottam Kshetra-1

Mohinee said - "I have heard that Vishnu's Purushottam Kshetra is the giver of Moksh, tell me about it." Vasu Jee said - "There is a region named Utkal which is the giver of Swarg and Moksh, on the shore of southern sea of Bhaarat Varsh. On its north shore is located Utkal region, where all Punya Teerth and temples etc are situated. This region is extended up to 10 Yojan (90 miles). As Chandramaa is among all Nakshatra and sea is among all water bodies, in the same way this Purushottam Teerth is best among all Teerth. By doing Darshan of Bhgavaan Purushottam once, by taking bath in the sea once, and by knowing Brahm Gyaan once, one doesn't have to come back in this world. They who live here, are very fortunate, because they take bath in the sea, and do Darshan of Bhagavaan Krishn.

In ancient times, there was a king named Indradyumn who was like Indra in might. He was a great devotee of Vishnu, truthful and lover of justice. Once he thought about worshipping Vishnu, but then how to do that? In which area? On the banks of which river, or Teerth or Aashram? Thinking like this he came to Purushottam Kshetra and there he did Ashwamedh Yagya. After the Yagya, he built a very high temple of Krishn, Balraam and Subhadraa there. Then he went to Panch Teerth and got Moksh."

Mohinee asked - "How Indradyumn made those idols and how Vishnu Bhagavaan got pleased with him?" Vasu said - "I tell you now about the appearance of those idols. When his Ashwamedh Yagya was over, he got worried about the idols, "What should I do so that I can do His Darshan." Worrying about this neither he could sleep in the day, nor in the night. "Which material - stone, wood, metal, should I use to make His idol? Among these three, whose idol will be the dearest to Bhagavaan by which He will be pleased." Thinking like this he worshipped Bhagavaan with Paanchraatra method and  then prayed like this (Indradyumn's prayer given on p 680-682 but no Shlok).

Bhagavaan got very happy with Indradumn's prayer. He fulfilled all wishes of Indradyumn.. After the prayer, thinking about all this, he lay down there and slept. Prabhu appeared in his dreams and said - "I am very pleased with your Yagya, Bhakti and Shraddhaa. Do not worry about the idols. I tell you how to get them. Tomorrow morning, you go to sea where there is a huge tree which is part in water and part on land. It does not shake even by the strongest sea waves. You go there carrying an axe and cut that tree without any fear. At the time of cutting it, you will see a strange thing there. You make your idols with that tree only." And Hari got disappeared.

Indradyumn got up and to pass the night started doing Jap of Vaishnav Mantra and Vishnu Sookt. In the morning he took bath in the sea and went to that place (which Hari told him). That tree was there. It was very high, red in color and without any fruit. The king could not know what tree it was. As per instructions of Hari, he cut it. As he was looking at its wood he saw a strange thing. Vishwakarmaa and Vishnu came there in disguise of Braahman and asked the king - "What do you intend to do here? This was the only tree here, why did you cut it?" the king greeted them politely and said - "I am thinking to make idol to worship Jagadeeshwar. He Himself has inspired me to do this." One of them said - "Blessed are you who thought like this in this immortal world. Come and sit with us under the shade of this tree and listen to some Dharm talks. He is very good sculptor and he will help you to make idols. He will make the idols according to my instructions." Hearing this Indradyumn went to them and sat under the shade of a tree.

Bhagavaan ordered Vishwakarmaa to make the idols. "Krishn's form should be very calm looking; His eyes should be like lotus flower petals; on His chest should be Shreevats mark and Kaustubh Mani; in His hands should be conch shell, lotus flower, mace and Divine disc. Another idol should be of milky white color; it should have Swastik mark on his body and plough in his hand. This is the form of mighty Anant. The third idol will be of Balraam's sister Subhadraa. Her body color should be like gold and beautiful and it should be with all auspicious marks on her body."

Hearing this Vishwakarmaa soon built those idols. Indradyumn got surprised to see this that all the idols were ready in just a moment. All idols were covered with two Divine clothes each and were looking so beautiful. The king said - "Are you not Brahmaa and Vishnu? I do not know your real form. I am in your shelter, please tell me about yourself correctly." Braahman said - "Know me as Purushottam. I am always present. I am the same  whom Yogee call Vaasudev. I am Brahmaa, Vishnu, Shiv, Yam. Whatever you see all are my forms. There is nothing different from me in this world. I am very pleased with you, so ask for any Var. Who are not a good soul they cannot see me even in their dreams, but I am very pleased with you, that is why I have appeared before you."

Indradyumn's all hair stood on his body and he started reading Stotra. Then he said - "If you are pleased with me then I wish to see your that form which Yogee meditate up on." Bhagavaan said - "Be blessed. You will get all your desired things. You will rule this Prithvi for 10,900 years, then you will attain Parampad which is difficult even for Devtaa and Asur. I will show you that form also. Until this Prithvi and sky are there; Moon, Sun and stars are there; mountains, rivers and seven seas are there, your glory will spread. The pond appeared from your Yagya Ghee will be known as Indradyumn Sarovar and if somebody will take bath in it even once he will go to Indra Lok. To its south, in south-west side, there is a banyan tree. Near it is a canopy covered with Kevadaa trees. In Aashaadh Maas, on Shukla Panchamee, in Maghaa Nakshatra our devotees will make a procession of our idols and keep them in that canopy for seven days. Brahmchaaree, Sanyaasee, students, Braahman, Vaanprasth, Grihasth everybody will pray us with Stotra, Ved Mantra etc." Thus after giving this Var to the king and deciding his time to stay in this Lok, Bhagavaan disappeared along with Vishwakarmaa. The king then brought those idols from there in chariots with lots of pomp and show and established them in auspicious Muhoort. When his time came he attained the Parampad."

Mohinee asked - "When one should go to Purushottam Kshetra? And how to do the five Teerth? Tell me the fruit of donation, Snaan, and Darshan in each Teerth." Vasu Jee said - "One should be there on Jyeshth Shukla Dwaadashee. He should take bath in Panch Teerth and do Darshan of Purushottam, he goes to Vishnu Lok and never comes back from there. Who does Darshan of His Divine disc from a distance, his all sins are washed away. First take bath in Maarkandeya Sarovar and do Darshan of Bhagavaan Shankar. Then he should go that Banyan tree, circumambulate it three times, and worship it. Who then greets Garud Jee and then does Darshan of Krishn, Balraam and Subhadraa he attains Param Gati. Upon entering the temple, first circumambulate them three times, then worship Balraam with his name Mantra, and after that worship Krishn with His 12-letter Mantra and pray. Whatever fruits one gets through all types of donations, Vrat, and fasts, he can get them just by Krishn's Darshan. And after this worship Subhadraa Devee, and then he should come out of the temple.

Then he should go to the place where Vishnu's Indraneel idol is hidden in sand. There he should do Pranaam to hidden Purushottam, then do Darshan of Narasinh Bhagavaan and worship him. How to worship Narasinh Bhagavaan? One should eat only vegetables, barley flour cooked in milk, roots, fruits or Sattoo, or remain only by drinking milk. Wear only most necessary clothes. Who worships Narasinh Bhagavaan in forest, in a lonely place, at a Sangam place, on a mountain, or even by establishing Narasinh's idol himself, he gets free from all sins. He should worship him  with incense, Dhoop, flower, jasmine flowers. This gives one Siddhi. Who reads Narasinh Kavach he can face all kinds of troubles. If somebody reads it three times, it protects one from ghosts, Pishaach, Raakshas, Daitya, Daanav etc. While in difficult times, facing thief or lion, in a lonely place, at the life threatening time by poison, fire or water, disease, whoever remembers Narasinh Bhagavaan his all worries go way. Whatever things a person thinks while remembering and worshipping Narasinh Bhagavaan, he certainly gets all of them.
