Lineage of Chandramaa

Maitreya Jee said - "Bhagavan, You told me about Soorya Vansh, now I wish to hear about Chandra Vansh." Paraashar Jee said - "Hey Muni, There have been many well-known kings in Chandra Vansh - such as Nahush, Yayaati, Kaartveerya and Arjun etc. Listen to about it now. Atri Prajaapati was the brainchild (Maanas Putra) of Brahmaa Jee. Atri's son was Chandramaa. Brahmaa Jee appointed him the Swaamee (Lord) of herbs, Braahman and constellations, so Chandramaa planned for a Raajsooya Yagya. He became proud of his prosperity, status, glory etc so he abducted Devtaa's Guru Brihaspati's wife Taaraa and did not return her in spite of Brahmaa Jee's request. Since he was against Brihaspati, Shukraachaarya (Daitya's Guru) became his friend; and Soorya helped Brihaspati, because Soorya was the student of Maharshi Angiraa and Brihaspati was the son of Angiraa.

Because Shukraachaarya was with Chandramaa, so all Daitya and Daanav allied with Chandramaa; and since Indra was with Brihaspati, all Devtaa allied with Brihaspati. Thus a great war broke between them. The whole world went to Brahmaa to stop this war. Brahmaa somehow succeeded to send Taaraa back to Brihaspati.

But Taaraa was pregnant, so Brihaspati said to her - "You cannot have another's son in my house. Remove it." So Taaraa dropped her fetus in a bush of Seenk. But that fetus was so graceful that all Devtaa's grace became dim in front of it. Later, seeing the beauty of that child, both Brihaspati and Chandramaa got interested to adopt him. Doubting this Devtaa asked Taaraa - "Tell us the truth. Is this child of Brihaspati or Chandramaa?" But Taaraa didn't say a word. When she did not speak in spite of asking several times, then the child himself spoke ready to curse her - "O wicked mother, Why don't you tell my father's name? I will take you to such a condition that you will forget speaking gradually."

Then Brahmaa himself asked Taaraa - "Dear daughter, Tell us correctly, whose son is he, Brihaspati's or Chandramaa's?" Then she replied softly, "Chandramaa's". Chandrama embraced his son and named him Budh. How Budh begot his son Pururavaa from Ilaa, it has been described before. Pururavaa was a great donor, performer of Yagya and highly graceful.

Urvashee Apsaraa had a Shaap from Mitraavarun to live on Prithvi, so she came to live on Prithvi and lived with Pururavaa. Pururavaa also forgot everything in her company. One day Pururavaa expressed his desire to marry her. Urvashee said - "If you can keep my vows then I can be yours." Pururavaa asked what were those vows, she said - "First, I have two rams which are like my sons, you will never send them away from my bed. Second, I should never see you naked. Third, I will eat only Ghee (clarified butter). That is all I want." Pururavaa said - "As you wish." Thus Pururvaa spend 60,000 years enjoying Urvashee in Alakaapuree's Chitrarath gardens and at other places. With this life Urvashee also forgot her life of Swarg.

Apsaraa, Siddh, Gandharv etc did not like Swarg without Urvashee, so they planned to bring Urvashee back to Swarg. One night, Vishwaavasu who knew about the vows of Urvashee, abducted one ram from Urvashee's bedroom. Urvashee heard its voice so she said - "Somebody is taking my son, to whom should I go for help?" In spite of hearing this the king did not get up lest she sees him naked in the night. After that Gandharv abducted another ram also. She heard the second one's voice also, she again spoke - "Oh, I am here with a coward. Whom should I call for help?"

Then the king thought that since it is dark, Urvashee will not be able to see me naked, he got up saying - "Just wait, you are dead." and followed the Gandharv. At the same time Gandharv produced a bright light. Seeing king naked Urvashee immediately left king's palace. Gandharv also abandoned those rams and went away. King's vow was broken, Urvashee was gone, king became mad after she left. He started wandering in the same naked condition all around.

One day he came across Urvashee who was with four Apsaraa in Kurukshetra area near a lotus pond. Seeing her he became mad and said, "Wait, just wait and talk to me." Urvashee said - "Do not talk like an ignorant. Presently I am pregnant, come here after one year. At that time you will get a son and I will also be with you for one night." Hearing this Pururava went away happily to his capital. After one year he came there and got a son named Aayu. Urvashee stayed with him for one night, and Pururavaa had five more sons from her. Urvashee said - "Gandharv are very pleased with you so they wish to bestow Var on you, ask a Var." Pururavaa said - "I have everything, I don't need anything. I just need to live with Urvashee."

Gandharv gave him an Agnisthalee (a pot of Agni - fire) and said - "Divide this fire in three parts - Grihasth, Aavaahan and Dakshinaagni and perform Yagya with Vedic method. You will get your desire fulfilled." The king took it and came to his city, but on the way he thought, "I am such a great fool. I brought this Agnisthalee and didn't bring Urvashee with me." so he left Agnisthalee in the forest itself and came back to his city.

At midnight he thought - "Gandharv gave me that Agnisthalee to get Urvashee, and I left it in the forest, let me bring that to get her." So he went back to the place where he left that Agnisthalee but he couldn't find it, instead there was a Shamee tree standing there. He brought it to his city and built Arani out of it, did Jaap of Gaayatree Mantra. This Jaap made  that Arani broken into 24 pieces, one finger long each. Then he did Yagya with the desire to have Urvashee. From the same fire he did several Yagya, got Gandharv Lok and got Urvashee back forever. Before this there was only one Agni, but from this Manvantar three types of Agni got introduced.
