Birth Dosh
[See Notes Numbers below]

The time of birth is examined for this Dosh and results are inferenced. Birth Dosh may include - (1) Tithi Dosh (Amaavasyaa, Krishn Chaturdashee, Shoonya and Dagdh Tithi and Ghatak Chakra); (2) Kar-naadee Dosh; (3) Upagraha Dosh; (4) Soorya Dosh; (5) Nakshatra Dosh (Ushna Ghatikaa, Vish Ghatikaa); (6) Gandant Dosh; (7) Vyateepaat Dosh; (8) Mrityu and Dagdh Yog; (9) Inauspicious Taaraa.

Paraashar has described the following birth time to be inauspicious as it indicates considerable turmoil for both the native and his family. Irrespective of the fine Yoga's obtaining in the chart, these moments are inauspicious for births as well as for starting any activity. But Raman writes correctly, "Should the radical horoscope indicate several afflictions, no Muhoort can ensure real success." Thus one must look into one's natal chart, before suggesting any Muhoort. For example, if we choose a favorable Tithi, eg the 4th, and this takes place in our 8th Bhaav / Moon (or from Lagna), surely the good effects will fail to pass.

Natal chart is the root, the fundament for anything. Muhoort is for supporting activities during appropriate periods (Dashaas), nothing else. If Dashaa are not supporting our desired goal or activity, even the best Muhoort has no value. If an event concurs with Natal Chart and Dashaa entry chart, then making fine-tuning with Muhoort principles (eg selecting auspicious Tithi), success must come. Perhaps even without differentiated Muhoort. If this coincidence with both Dashaa types is not the case, spending time on Muhoort is useless.

That is why the native's birth sign and Nakshatra should be known for choosing appropriate Muhoort.

Types of Dosh
These are broadly called Dosh (Flaw or fault in the quality of time) and include:

1. Tithi Dosh (Amaavasyaa, Krishn Chaturdashee, Shoonya and Dagdh Tithi and Ghatak Chakra)
2. Kara-naadee Dosh
3. Upagraha Dosh
4. Soorya Dosh
5. Nakshatra Dosh (Ushna Ghatikaa, Vish Ghatikaa)
6. Gandant Dosh
7. Vyateepaat
8. Mrityu and Dagdh Yogas
9. Inauspicious Taaraa
10. Ashtam Lagna
11. Ashtam Chandra

1. Tithi Dosh
Tithi is the Vaidik Lunar day reckoned from the Full Moon or New Moon wherein each day is equal to a lunar transit of 12 degrees from the Sun. The birth in Amaavasyaa 1 [1] , Krishn Chaturdashee 2 [2], Shoonya Tithi (Zero effect Tithi) and Dagdh Tithi (Combust Tithi) are considered inauspicious.

1.1 Amaavasya
This Tithi is ruled by Raahu and is considered very inauspicious as it brings poverty on the person born as well as the family. It rules hell and brings untold misfortunes. A lady born in this Tithi is said to become a widow early. However, if suitable remedial measures are performed, then great wealth is obtained through foreign connections & trade, or from mines etc. from below the ground. A female born in such a combination also begets three sons after the remedial measures. Since Raahu afflicts the Sun and Moon, the remedy lies in worshipping them in the direction of Raahu (South-West).

1.2 Krishn Chaturdashee
The Krishn Paksh Chaturdashee Tithi occurs when the Moon is at a distance of 336 degree to 348 degree from the Sun. it is also called Narak (Hell) Chaturdashee. This span of 12 degree is divided into six parts of 2 degree each with the results as follows:

Part Extent (Moon-Sun) Results Remarks
1st 336-338 Auspicious and good results Rudra in the Lagna
2nd 338-340 Destruction or death of Father Rudra in the 3rd, being the 7th from the 9th house causes death of father.
3rd 340-342 Death of Mother Rudra in the 5th, being the 2nd from the 4th causes the death of mother
4th 342-344 Death of maternal uncle Rudra in the 7th being the 2nd from the 6th causes the death of maternal uncle.
5th 344-346 Destruction of the lineage Rudra in the 11th Being the 7th from the 5th it destroys the lineage or progeny and next generation
6th 346-348 Death or destruction of the native Rudra in the 9th

1.3 Shoonya and Dagdh Tithi and Ghatak Chakra
The Tithi are classified on the basis of the Panch Tattwa as
1. Nandaa        (1, 6 & 11)   -   Jal (Water)
2. Bhadraa      (2, 7 & 12)   -   Prithvi (Earthy)
3. Jayaa         (3, 8 & 13)   -   Agni (Fiery)
4. Rikt           (4, 9 & 14)   -   Vaayu (Airy)
5. Poornaa      (5, 10 & 15)  -   Aakaash (Ethery)

If the Tithi is Ghatak or Ghaatak (afflicts) to the Moon sign then it is Shoonya (Zero effect) Tithi,
If it is Ghatak or Ghaatak to the Sun sign, then it is Dagdh (Combust) Tithi.

For Illustration, if someone is born in Cancer Lagna and the Tithi of some event happens to be on Saptamee, we can see that, Saptamee which is a Bhadraa Tithi is Ghatak to the Moon sign in Cancer and hence the Tithi becomes Shoonya. The result of such activity undertaken on such day becomes fruitless. Similarly Ghatak Raashi, Nakshatra, Day or Lagna can be avoided for any auspicious activity.

2. Karan Dosh
Birth in Bhadra (Visti) Karan is considered to be inauspicious.

3. Upagraha Dosh
Birth at the time of Vyateepaat, Paridhi, Vajra etc or in Yam Ghantak is inauspicious. Remedy lies in the Parikramaa (going around in the clockwise manner while reciting the Mantra) of the Peepal tree 108 times for improving the Longevity, Yagya for Lord Vishnu or Rudraabhishek for Lord Shiv.

4. Soorya Dosh
Flaws associated with the Sun are called Soorya Dosh. This could be either due to the birth at the time of Sankraanti (Solar ingress into a sign) or due to the birth during an eclipse. The eclipse can be seen from association of nodes with the Sun on a new moon day. Thus whenever, one of the nodes is with the Sun and Moon conjunction, the birth is supposed to have occurred on a day of eclipse.

4.1 Sankraanti (Solar Ingress)
Birth in Sankraanti causes Soorya Dosh. Depending on the day of birth, the names of the seven Sankraanti are Ghor, Dhwanshi, Mahodari, Mandaa, Mandaakinee, Mishra and Rakshasee. Soorya is the significator of whatever support we get from this world as well as health and vitality. Thus, Soorya Dosh causes poverty, loss of health and many troubles related to the profession.

4.2 Eclipse
Birth in a solar eclipse causes poverty and many hardships while that in a lunar eclipse causes physical ailments and all kinds of health problems. The solar eclipse occur whenever one of the node is placed with Sun and Moon conjunction and the lunar eclipse occur whenever one of the node conjoin the luminaries in opposition.

6. Gandant Dosh
Gandant Dosh is of three kinds. These are Lagna Gandanta, Raashi Gandant and Tithi Gandant.

6.1 Raashi Gandant
Gandant refers to the junction signifying end or a new beginning and in the Bhoo-Chakra (Zodiac) the three points of Zero degree Aries, Leo and Sagittarius in the junction of the Fire and Water signs shows the Gandant. These are called Brahmaa Naabhi (Navel of Brahmaa the Creator). The Gandant stretches for 3°20' on either side of these points. Thus, the last quarter of Jyeshthaa Nakshatra and the first quarter of Mool Nakshatra are called Jyeshthaa Gandant and Mool Gandant or A-bhukt Mool. The deities of these two constellations are Indra and Raakshas respectively and are highly inimical to each other. Similarly the junction between Aashleshaa and Maghaa constellations (last quarter of Aashleshaa in Cancer and first quarter of Maghaa in Leo) is very inauspicious. These four quarters have been given the highest negative value requiring the donation of three cows (or alms). The other junction between the last quarter of Revatee in Pisces and the first quarter of Ashwinee in Aries is also baneful, but has a lesser inauspiciousness value of two cows.

More precisely, the 3 degree and 40 minutes after the start of the first constellation of fiery signs and five Ghatikaa (1 degree 6 seconds) before the end of the last constellation of watery signs is called Gandant. If birth is in the daytime, it is called Pitri Gandant while a night birth during Gandant is called Maatri Gandant. Another classification is that the birth in Revatee (Pisces) -Ashwinee (Aries) junction is called Swa-Gandant, birth in Aashleshaa (Cancer) - Maghaa (Leo) junction is called Maatri Gandant while that in the Jyeshthaa (Scorpio) - Mool (Sagittarius) junction is called Pitri Gandant.

Lunar Transit as the Measure of Time:
Moon takes approximately 60 Ghatikaa or 1 day to transit 1 Nakshatra (13.333 deg).
With this principle 3 Ghatikaa would be 3/60th portion of one Nakshatra duration (13.333 deg) which is 40 arc seconds.

6.2 A-bhukt Gandant
Naarad Muni has stated that of these six constellations, the "A-bhukt Mool Gandant" comprises the last two Ghatikaa (48 minutes) of Jyeshthaa and first two Ghatikaa (48 minutes) of Mool constellation. [The times given here are for the Lunar transit and not degrees of the Zodiac]. He adds that such a child should be abandoned (or given away) or any form of hope from him should not be made. If the child survives, father should not see his face for 8 years after birth. Other authorities indicate 27 days for this abstraction of father from seeing the face of the child, which seems more practical in today's context. Thereafter suitable remedial measures should be performed.

6.3 Mool-Nivaas (Residence of Mool)
In the Vaidik months of Maargsheersh, Phaalgun, Vaishaakh and Jyeshth, the residence of Mool is in "Paataal Lok" (the hell). In Shraavan, Kaarttik, Chaitra and Paush months, the residence of Mool is in Martya Lok (the realm of Dead); and in the four Vaidik months of Aashaadh, Aashwin, Bhaadrapad and Maagh, the residence of Mool is in Swarg Lok (the Heavens) 3 [26].

If birth is in Gandant and the residence of Mool is in the realm of the dead (Martya Lok) then great evil is indicated. The evil is lesser for the other Lok. Movable fixed and dual signs in the Ascendant (Lagna) are said to give Mool residence of Swarg (Heaven), Paataal (Hell) and Martya Lok (Death realm), respectively.

6.4 Lagn Gandant
In the junction of water & fire signs Lagna Gandanta exists for duration of 1 Ghatika 15 Vighatika each in the end/beginning respectively. [Note: 1 Ghatikaa 15 Vighatikaa is a duration of 1 hour. The second half of water sign and first half of fire signs have this Gandant (However, most authorities agree that the Gandant is in the related constellation) .The Lagna falling in any of these points causes Lagna Gandant while the Moon in these quarters causes Raashi Gandant.

6.5 Gand Phal: (Results of Birth in Gandant)
Lagna Gandant results in the loss of intelligence while Raashi Gandant results in premature death or loss of longevity. The remedy lies in worshipping the Lord of the Lagna or Moon constellation depending on the type of Gandant. This deity becomes the Devata (Deity-in-Chief). Since the affliction comes from an adjoining sign, the Lord of the nature of the sign becomes the Adhi-Devata and the Lord of the afflicting constellation becomes the Pratyadhi-Devataa.

For example, let us determine the deities for Jyeshthaa Gandant. The Lord of the Jyesthaa constellation (as per table 3.2) is Indra. So, Indra is the Devataa or Chief deity. Jyeshthaa is in Scorpio and the junction affliction comes from the sign Sagittarius having the Mool constellation. Sagittarius is a fiery sign and the God of fire Agni is the Adhi-Devataa. Mool is the afflicting constellation and the Lord of this constellation (as per table 3.2) is Raakshas who is the Pratyadhi-Devataa.

Remedy of Gandant:
The ritual is normally performed in the Eastern or Northern part of the house depending on whether the Gandant is in a fiery sign (East) or watery sign (North). The Kalash (water pot) containing Panchgavya, Shasht Aushadhi and Gangaa water is installed. The idol of the Devataa is installed on another earthen pot adjoining the Kalash or a gold coin can be used to represent the deity. Similarly, the Adhi-Devtaa and Pratyadhi-Devataa are also installed and worshipped (for more details refer to BPHS). This is followed by a Yagya (Fire sacrifice) and Abhishek (Ritual bathing with Mrityunjaya Mantra). The water from the two Kalash would be poured on the head of the parents and the child. Donations, Dakshinaa and breaking of fast ends the ritual. Rudraabhishek as well as ceremonial bathing of the afflicted persons is necessary. For the
(1) Day born child, Gand Dosh for father and child
(2) Night birth child, Gand Dosh for Mother and child and
(3) Sandhyaa (Sunrise/ sunset) born child, Gand Dosh for both father and mother and child - all are to be protected with Abhishek using four vessels of water etc and Sahastraaksh Mantra.

People who cannot afford these elaborate rituals should recite the Mahaa Mrityunjaya Mantra eight thousand times within 40 days of the birth starting from the 12th day from the birth of the child. It maybe noted that remedial measures cannot be performed for 11 days following birth.

Besides what has already been stated, there are other methods of determining the results of Gandant. The number of the birth asterism (Janma Nakshtra) is multiplied by three (3). The numbers of birth Tithi (as reckoned from Shukla Paksh Pratipadaa) and the day of birth (as reckoned from Sunday) are added and the sum is divided by eight (8). The remainder indicates the Gand Dosh (Error/Evil) as given in the following table...

Remainder  Gand Type Results
1 Mool Gand Mool Vinaash: Complete destruction of ideals and personality / identity of the self or death.
2 Stanwa Gand Dhan Vinaash: Destruction of wealth.
3 Twachaa Gand Maatri Vinash: Destruction of mother (and maternal relation).
4 Sakha Gand Aatm Shakti Vinaash: Destruction of physical power and mental strength.
5 Patra Gand Maatul Naash: Destruction of maternal grand father (also maternal relations).
6 Pushp Gand Bhraatri Vinaash: Destruction of Co-born.
7 Phal Gand Pitri Vinaash: Destruction of Father.
8 Sheeshn Gand Sarv Vinaash: Complete destruction.

Example: Male born on 28 March 1962. Tithi: Saptamee (7) Krishn Paksh on Wednesday.
Moon in Jyeshthaa constellation.
Jyeshthaa is the 18th star counted from Ashwinee. Thus 18 x 3 = 54;
Birth Tithi is 7th lunar day of dark half = 7+15 = 22;
Birth day = Wednesday = 4
Sum = 54+22+4 = 80 Divided by 8, the remainder in 0/8, indicating Sheeshn Gandant or complete destruction. In the horoscope, the Moon is in the 9th house ruling father and Dharma. The native saw the complete destruction of his fathers business and status within two years of his going abroad for higher studies (9th house).

Pad Phal Causes Gandant
Results of birth in different quarters of the constellation causing Gandant:
Ashwinee : (1) Father Suffers (2) Destruction of wealth and happiness (3) Kingly status (4) Respect
Aashleshaa : (1) Kingdom (governor of a territory) (2) Loss of wealth (3) Loss of mother (4) Loss of Father
Maghaa : (1) Mother/relatives loss (2) Loss of Father (3) Loss of happiness and wealth (4) Loss of wealth
Jyeshthaa : (1) Lost of eldest brother (2) Loss of younger brother (3) Loss of father (4) Early death.
Revatee : (1) Kingly status (2) Ministerial status (3) Gain of happiness and wealth (4) Many difficulties

Riders Causes Gandant
Abhijit Muhoort and good Yog's obtaining at birth tend to nullify the adverse effect of birth in Gandant. Female birth in daytime and male birth at night are exempt from Gand Dosh. However, this only reduces the extent of the evil and does not terminate it.

Chart 0.5 Male born on the 28th of March 1962 at 6:29'AM at 22N6, 85E17
In Chart 3-5, the Moon is in 29 degree 41' in Scorpio in Jyesthaa Nakshatra (4th Pad). This is Jyesthaa Gandanta and since it is a Raashi (Moon) Gandant, there will be danger to the life. The remedial measures were performed and the parents took the child to a Siddh Purush Swaamee Mintoo Mahaaraaj. On seeing the child the Mahaaraaj observed "a storm will blow but the child will survive" and gently patted the left eye of the child. In his sixth year while going to school, the bus crashed on the mountain roads and miraculously the child survived. An iron rod had cut his left eyebrow narrowly missing his left eye and his navel was swollen considerably. Yet he survived the storm. The reasons can be seen from the exalted Venus 4 [27] in Vargottam in the Lagna.

Paraashar adds that if the child survives the Gandant Arisht 5 [28], then he becomes very strong and powerful and enjoys many Raaj Yog. The point is that the Gandant are akin to Rudra (Shiva/Hanumaan) and symbolizes the birth of a powerful individual. They are exceedingly brave and fearless. It is also observed that like Hanumaan Jee, these persons either stay bachelors/ Brahmachaaree throughout life or marry at a very late age. Thus, suitable remedial measures will also have to be performed for marriage at a later date for them. Tulasee Daas, the author of Raam Charit Maanas was born in Mool Gandant. He lost his mother in childbirth and his father died in a fire accident occurring within 12 days of his birth. Miraculously he survived the fire but was abandoned. He was brought up by monkeys (Hanumaan Jee) in the outskirts of the village! He was fortunate in his Guru and his compositions like the Hanumaan Chaaleesaa are considered very auspicious.

6.7 Tithi Gandant
Tithi Gandant: The junction between Poornaa 6 [29] and Nandaa Tithi are called Tithi Gandanta. Here the junction in defined as four Ghatikaa (two Ghatikaa in the end of Poornaa Tithi and two Ghatikaa in the beginning of Nandaa Tithi).

Just like the Raashi and Lagna Gandanta occurred at the junction between two groups of signs having the four Tattwa 7 [30], the Tithi Gandanta occurs in the junction of the Tithi when one group of the five elements ends and another begins. Thus, the junction is always between Poorn (5, 10 & 15) Tithi and Nandaa (6, 11 & 1) Tithi. These junctions are between Amaavasyaa (K-15) and Sukla-Pratipada (S-1); Panchamee and Shashti (S-5 & S-6 or K-5 & K-6); Dashamee & Ekaadashee (S-10 & s-11 or K-10 & K-11) and Poornimaa and Krishn Pratipadaa (S-15 & K-1). The Gandanta extends for 1° (One Degree) on either side of the junction. This is not a very serious Dosh. However, the remedy lies in worshipping the Luminaries.

6.8 Gulikodaya Kalaa:
Gulikaa is the son of Saturn and stands for evils and misfortune. The time at which it rises is inauspicious. Their rising time each day is as follows (1 Ghatikaa = 24 minutes) :

Weekday Day (Ghatikaa after Sunrise) Night (Ghatikaa after Sunset)
Sunday 26 10
Monday 22 06
Tuesday 18 26
Wednesday 14 26
Thursday 10 22
Friday 06 18
Saturday 02 14

The above Ghatikaas are given with the assumption that the day and night length are 30 Ghatikas (1 hr = 2.5 Ghatikaa) each. However in real practice this is not so. Hence, to ascertain the real time of their rising, we must proportionally change the rising Ghatikaa. For example, if the day length is 28 Ghatikaa on a Sunday. Then the Gulikodaya Kalaa would be 28/30 x 26 = 24.267 Ghatikaa after sunrise.

7. Vyateepaat:
The Vyateepaat falls in the following Nakshatra in the corresponding solar months:

Solar Months Nakshatra
Aries / Libra Maghaa and Shatabhishaa
Taurus/ Scorpio Shravan and Pushya
Gemini / Sagittarius P-Aashaadhaa and Aardraa
Cancer / Capricorn Rohinee and Jyesthaa
Leo / Aquarius Bharanee and Swaati
Virgo / Pisces Revatee and Swaati

8. Mrityu and Dagdh Yog:
The days coinciding with a particular Nakshatra give rise to this Yog. They are as follows:

Mrityu Yog : Association of Day     and    Nakshatra
                                    Sunday :            Maghaa
                                    Monday :           Vishaakhaa
                                    Tuesday :          Aardraa
                                    Wednesday:       Mool
                                    Thursday :         Shatabhishaa
                                    Friday :             Rohinee
                                    Saturday :         P-Aashaadhaa

Dagdh Yog : Association of Day      and     Tithi
                                   Sunday :             Dwaadashee (12)
                                   Monday :            Ekaadashee (11)
                                   Tuesday :           Panchamee (5)
                                   Wednesday:       Dwiteeyaa (2)
                                   Thursday :         Shasthee (6)
                                   Friday :             Ashtamiee (8)
                                   Saturday :         Navamee (9)

9. Inauspicious Taaraa
In the Nava Taaraa Chakra, the 27 Constellations are distributed into three groups of 9 Constellations each. The each groups of nine is known as Nava Taaraa (Nava-9; Taaraa - star). See also  Vedh Star. The order repeats in the following sequence:

Janm
Sampat or Sampadaa
Vipat
Kshem
Pratyak
Saadhanaa
Naidhan
Mitra
Param Mitra

If the Moon is stronger than Lagna (more planets in quadrant to Moon), then the Nava Taaraa Chakra is stated from the Lagna Nakshatra otherwise it should be stated from Moon. Excluding the 9th star, all the odd Taaraa are inauspicious.

10. Ashtam Lagna:
The Muhoort Lagna should not be in the 8th House from the Janm Lagna.

11. Ashtam Chandra:
The Muhoort Raashi should not be in the 8th House from the Janm Raashi.
