Retrograde (Vakree)
When a Planet goes backward, it is called retrograde (Vakree). It does not give the same results as it is supposed to give when it is going on its normal path. It is almost fallen.

Romak Siddhaant
This is a book on principles of mathematical theory of ancient times.It is based on the principles of Yamana astrologer.Yaman astrology was particularly prevalent in Greece, Egypt etc countries. Romak Siddhaant gives the data on Sun and Moon and also describes in detail about Months, Exhausted Month, Dates and Exhausted Dates. The citizens of Babylon worship 5 planetary gods. These five planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Romak  Siddhaant mentions the worshipping of these five planets. Romak Siddhaant is a form of Lomash Siddhaant only. Romak word was introduced in ancient scriptures for the citizens of Rog country .The science associated with astrological calculations is one of the major principles in the scriptures. As these principle books were composed in Roman , so they were named Romanak after its name.

When Soorya enters the new Sign, that time is called Sankraanti. Since there are 12 Signs in a year, and the Sun goes in a new Sign every month, there are 12 Sankraanti in a year. But the main important Sankraanti is Makar Sankraanti which falls on 14th January every year. On this day the Sun starts his journey Northward. From this day onward, the next 6 months are considered auspicious.

Sphoot is a position of a Planet without the number of Raashi, for example

Sphoot Lagna Navaansh
Take the degrees of a Planet which has traversed the greatest degrees in a Sign, add them to the degrees of Moon, divide the sum by 9, the remainder represents the Sphoot Lagna Navaansh. For example: in a chart Moon has traversed 29 degrees. So adding Moon degrees to it, it comes 58. Dividing it by 9 leaves the remainder 4 - therefore Kark (Cancer) is the Sphoot Lagna Navaansh.

Star
A star is a single star. The constellation consists of several stars. A Galaxy consists of billions of constellations. The universe consists of billions of Galaxies.. A Nakshatra is a constellation but every constellation can not be called Nakshatra, because this word has specific definition, meaning and purpose in Indian Vaidik astrology.

Stationary
There are some occasions when a Planet moves neither forward, nor goes backward; this situation is called stationary.

Stotra is to appease a planet. It is singing the praises of the planet. Stotra, normally ending with expressions like 'pranamyamham' I bow to thee or 'sharanamyamham' .. I come to thy shelter. No person can be better pleased than by telling him that I seek your shelter or that I bow to you. When a planet is otherwise strong and needs being appeased, it is advisable to recite the Stotra. In case the planet is rather weak then it is advised to recite the Beej Mantra. Both the Stotra and the Beej Mantra can be used for the same problem. Both of them are planet specific and not problem specific. If advised, both can be used for the same problem.

Sunrise, True (or Astrological)
When center of the Sun's disc comes at horizon, it is known as astrological Sunrise. But humans see the first ray of Sun from its upper tip nearly 64 seconds earlier, and refraction adds another 2.5 minutes in sending first rays of the Sun to us when the real Sun still lies beneath the horizon.

Sun Sign is that part of the celestial sphere in which Sun resides at the time of birth. Since the Sun goes around the earth in 12 months and the signs are also 12, the Sun passes a Sign through one month. For example, if a native is born at a time when the Sun was in Mithun (Gemini) sign, his Sun sign will be Gemini. Sun sign is the center for a native's prediction in western astrology.

UL - Upapad Lagna
UL stands for Upapad Lagna (Arudha Pad of the 12th House). It is mostly meant for marriage. So if your UL is placed say for example in Scorpio, the ruling deity is Mars and the day is Tuesday. So UL day will become Tuesday. Other Example: If UL is placed in Taurus, so the ruler of Taurus is Venus, and hence the UL Day is Friday. Calculating UL can be done by reading Narshima Rao's book or by their software JHora Lite.

Such stars give very special effects as they are also in conjunction with some major fixed stars which are not considered in normal day to day analysis. It reduces its impact if it is placed in Du-Sthaan, eg  6H, or 8H, or 12H.
