Shraavan Maas is
the 5th month of Hindu Lunar calendar year. It is considered a very holy
month. Many holy activities are performed in this month. It is auspicious
to donate new sandals / Chappals and honey during this month.
1) Shraavan Krishn Dwiteeyaa - Phal Dwiteeyaa Vrat
On Shraavan Krishn Dwiteeyaa. Worship Bhagavaan with fruits in the morning, keep
fast the whole day and eat the same fruits in the evening.
(2) Shraavan Krishn Panchamee - Naag Panchamee Festival
On Shraavan Krishn Panchamee. Worship Naag and save yourself from Naag, serpents
and snakes.
(3) Shraavan Shukla Teej - Hariyaalee Teej Festival
Hariyaalee Teej falls on
Shraavan Shukla Teej. It is most popular in UP and Uttaraanchal. This is not a
Vrat (fast) as such. Married women and girls worship Gauree with many delicious
foods, take out Baayanaa and swing. In fact the whole Shraavan Maas is for them.
They come to stay at their parent's house to celebrate all these festivals.
Parents-in-laws send Sindaaraa (sweets, clothes, jewelry and other things for
Suhaagin, such as Sindoor, glass bangles and cosmetics etc) for their daughter-in-law.
If somehow the girl or the woman is in her in-law's house then the parents or her
brother sends this to her in her in-laws' house.
(4) Shraavan Poornimaa - Rakshaa Bandhan
This day sisters tie Raakhee on the right wrist of their brothers.
There are some other Vrat to be kept and auspicious things to be done in this
month.
(5) Monday Vrat
Keeping fast on all Mondays of Shraavan Maas is very common in Uttar Pradesh
area. Unmarried girls, married girls and women, even men are seen fasting these

(6) Tuesday Vrat
This Vrat is called Mangalaa Gauree Vrat and it is kept on all Tuesdays of
Shraavan Maaas. This Vrat may also be kept by anybody, girls, women, married

(7) Thursday Poojaa
Who have Guru Dosh in the ir charts, worship Brihaspati on all Thursdays of
Shraavan Maas. They do Brihaspati Shaani Hom or Shaanti Jap for his evil
effects. It is done for good education, longevity of life and recovery of
physical illness.
(8) Saturday Vrat
People do Hanumaan Poojaa on all Saturdays in Shraavan Maas. This festival is
called Maaruti Ashwatth Poojaa in Mahaaraashstra and in some parts of Gujaraat.
Ashwatth tree (Banyan tree) is also worshipped along with Hanumaan
Shraavan Shukla Chauth
Those who have Sarp Dosh in their Jaatak (birth chart), they should do Sarp
Sanskaar Hom, Ashlesha Bali. It will bring Vansh Abhivriddhi (children) and
they will be relieved from Sarp Dosh.
Shravan Shukla Panchamee
Those who have Budh Grah Dosh in their Jaatak (birth chart), they should do
Vainateya Hom , Naaraayan Hom . By doing this Hom, they will be relieved from
Budh Graha Dosh.
Shraavan Shukla Shashthee
Those who are running Guru Dashaa, they should Rudra Hom on this day, so that
obstacles in Guru Dashaa can be relieved.
Shraavan Shukla Tuesday
Mangalaa Gauree Vrat, Indraakshee Hom, Gauree Hom, Rudra Hom to be performed
by those who have Chandra Dashaa, Shukra Dashaa and have marriage problems.
They will be married soon by doing these.
Shraavan Shukla Chaturdashi
Those who have problems in education, they should perform Hayagreev Hom, Medha
Dakshinaa Moorthi Hom, Sarswatee Hom. Those who follow Rig Roopaa Karmaa or Yaju
Roopaa Karmaa, they should change their Yagyopaveet with 1000 Gayatri Jap.
