him a lot, but when he could not find him, he thought that maybe some wild
animal had eaten him. The child when did not see his father started crying. A
hunter heard his cry and took him to his house and brought him up as his own
son. Ratnaakar started hunting and later he got married and had a few children
too. Now he could not maintain his family only by hunting so he starting robbing
people going through the forest.
--Once Naarad Jee passed by that way, Ratnaakar tried to rob him too. He said,
"I have only this Veenaa, if you want it you can take it, but what will you do
of this?" He further asked him why did he rob innocent people like this?
Ratnaakar replied that he did this to fee his family. Naarad Jee asked - "This
is sin and have you asked your family members that whether they will share the
fruit of the sin you are committing for them?" Ratnaakar said, "Why not, they
will." Naarad Jee said to him, "Go and ask them." He was hesitant to leave him
there, as he might run away, Naarad Jee said, "If you are hesitant, you may tie
me with this tree, till you come back." So he tied him with a tree and went to
his home and asked his family members whether they would share his sins. When
they clearly refused, he came to his senses and fell on Naarad Jee's feet and
asked him the way as how his sin will be washed away. Naarad Jee said to him to
recite "Raam, Raam". But Ratnaakar told that he could not recite Raam Raam, so
Naarad Jee asked him to recite "Maraa, Maraa" which surprisingly became Raam
Raam if recited continuously, till he came back. Ratnaakar sat down and started
reciting Maraa, Maraa. Naarad Jee came back after a long time, till then ants
had made anthills around him. Anthill is called Valmeeki in Hindee language.

Lav and Kush, and they sang it to Raam.

two sons - Lav and Kush in his Aashram.

so they kept it in a pitcher. Munivar Agastya and Vashishth Jee were born from that semen only.

they were born, which he did.
--His seventh child was Balaraam but Vishnu's Shakti Yog Maayaa pulled him out of
Devakee's womb and kept it in Rohinee's womb, thus her seventh pregnancy was
considered aborted; while Balaraam became known as Rohinee's child. His eighth
son was Krishn whom he exchanged with Yashodaa's daughter who was killed by
Kans. Krishn was brought up by Nand and Yashodaa of Gokul till 12 years of age.
--Later when Krishn killed Kans, Vasudev and Devakee got freed and became king. Once Devakee requested
Krishn to show her first six dead sons' who were killed by Kans. Krishn did that.

--He was Tumbaru named Gandharv who was a great devotee of Lakshmee, but was
born as a Raakshas as a result of Kuber's Shaap. Viraadh means "without
love", and in another context "Verily adoring" like Raadhaa of
Krishn. He used to adore Lakshmee, so when he saw Seetaa, he saw Lakshmee in Her
and in adoration he lifted Her. But he could not recognize Raam and Lakshman
because of their attire. They were in sage attire but were looking like
warriors, and were with a woman so he got confused.

--Atharv Ved, 8.10.22, also says that he was the son of Prahlaad.
--According to Chhaandogya Upanishad, he and Indra went to Brahmaa Jee to learn
about Aatmaa.
--[Naarad Puraan, 2/7] says that Virochan's
wife's name was Vishaalaakshee.
--He had a sister also who was married to Vishwakarmaa.
--His son Bali became a very great donor. He donated the whole Tri-Lok to Vishnu
when He came in the form of Vaaman at his door and asked for three feet land.
--His two granddaughters (Bali's daughters), named Vajrajwaalaa, was married to Kumbhkarn;
and Ratnmaalaa incarnated as Pootanaa who breastfed Krishn, attained the status
of Vishnu's mother and went to His Lok.
--It is said that Kaalnemi was also the son of Virochan. He was born as Kans in
Dwaapar Yug.

Kaikasee or Keshinee or (daughter of Raakshas Sumaalee and Sukeshee)
--Children - 1 son - Kuber (from Idvidaa)
3 sons - Raavan, Kumbhkarn, Vibheeshan (from Kaikasee)

known that who was Mandaakinnee's father.
--[Bhavishya Puraan, 3/27] gives his elder
wife's name as Ilvalaa instead of Idvidaa.
--[Padm Puraan, 5/40]
says that his second wife Kaikasee was Sumaalee and Sukeshee's daughter.
--[V-Raamaayan, 7/1] The story of his birth
is very strange. Once Pulastya Muni was doing Tap that many girls used to come there and disturb his
Tapasyaa, so he announced that from tomorrow whoever will come here will get pregnant. All
the girls heard it so they never came back near him, but King Trinbindu's daughter [Idvidaa] didn't
know this so she came there as usual. She didn't see her friends, so she wandered around to look for
them and according to Muni's words got pregnant. When she got back home, his
father asked her, "What happened to you?" She said, "I don't know. As
usual I went to play with my friends, but I couldn't find anyone so I was
wandering searching them and I got pregnant." Trinbindu found out through Yog that it was
because of Pulastya's Shaap. So he immediately went to him and offered his
daughter to him. Pulastya readily accepted her. She started serving him. After some
time Rishi got pleased with her services bestowed her with a son who was named as Paulastya or Vishravaa.
--[Aangiras, p 108] says that he had two wives - Devavarninee, the daughter of the Chief of the Yaksh tribe,
who had the son Kuber. Because of being the son of Yaksh mother he was a Yaksh. The second wife was Kaikasee who was the
daughter of Raakshas Sumaalee, that is why Raavan and his other brothers and
sister were Raakshas.
VISHTI - Daughter of Soorya and Chhaayaa

--Soorya had two wives - Sangyaa hand Chhaayaa. From Sangyaa he had three

VISHWAAMITRA - First king, then Maharshi. Son of king Gaadhi
(Son of Kushik)
--Married to - Himaavatee
--Children - 1 son - Raivya
- 1 son - Ashtak (from Yayaati's daughter Maadhavee) (see
MBH-Stories-Gaalav)
- 1
daughter - Shakuntalaa (from Menakaa Apsaraa, brought up by Kanv Rishi)
--Since he was born in Kaushik family, he is called Kaushik too.
--The same [V-Raamaayan, 1/10],
Vishwaamitra, giving his own introduction, says that I am the son of Gaadhi. My lineage is - Brahmaa ->
Kush -> Kushnaabh -> Gaadhi -> Vishwaamitra.
--Vishwaamitra's original name was Vishwarath. He had a grandson named Paravasu.
--King Gaadhi had a daughter Satyavatee who was married to Muni Richeek. Once
Muni Richeek cooked Charu (a type of Kheer with rice and milk) for both, his wife
Satyavatee and her mother, and asked his wife to give her mother's portion to her
and went away to forest. But Satyavatee forgot which portion was her own and
which portion was of her mother, so she gave her portion to her mother. When
Richeek came back he got very sad at this. He said - "I put Brahmaa in your
Charu and a Kshatriya in your mother's Charu, now it will be otherwise" - means that you will have a Kshatriya
son and she will have a Braahman son. At this Satyavatee requested to change it, but he said that it
could not be so. Then Satyavatee asked that she didn't want such son, her grandson might be like this.
Richeek Muni said, "Let it be so". So Satyavatee gave birth to Maharshi Jamadagni (Parashuraam's
father) and Gaadhi had Vishwarath who later became Braahman.
--[Aangiras, p 95] says that he ruled in Kaanyakubj country, Kannauj being its capital - a 4,000 year old city.
Perhaps his grandfather Jahnu (who drank Gangaa water) was the founder of this
kingdom. It came to an end when Vishwaamitra decided to become a Braahman ascetic.
[Now where this Jahnu has come from?]
--At another place [p 344] Aangiras says the he lived during 2250-2150 BC years.
Although he was a king but he chose to be a Brahmarshi and thus the kingdom
ended with Gaadhi, his father. At the time he left the kingdom, the kingdom of
Kaashe also became weak, this weakness gave rise to Dasyu (slave) in this region
whose king Shambar captured the whole kingdom. Vishwaamitra became the priest in
Sudaas' court in Saptsindhu. Upon his death, Vishwaamitra was succeeded by sage
Vashishth. He and his descendents have contributed the entire 3rd Mandal of Rig
Ved Sanhitaa. There are some incorrect statements about Vishwaamitra. First, he
is shown as the contemporary of Shree Raam - while the fact is that he lived
several generations before Raam. Second, Vishwaamitra is being mentioned as the
father of Shakuntalaa - while the fact is that Vishwaamitra was a descendent of
Dushyant and Shakuntalaa. Third, that Vishwaamitra and Vashishth were enemies.
This is a wild imagination of some people who have written some portions of
Puraan some 3,000 years after the time of Vishwaamitra. He wrote Saavitree (Gaayatree)
Mantra. He uplifted Shoodra also. Once King Harishchandra wanted to give
sacrifice of a boy Shunahshep, he saved his life and adopted him as his own son.
--Once he saw the glory of Brahmarshi Vashishth, since then he wished to become
Brahmarshi. He did severe Tap several times and at last he was declared
Brahmarshi by Brahmaa himself.
--During one Tap Indra disturbed him by sending Menakaa to him. She lived with
him for ten years and they had a daughter Shakuntalaa. Menakaa could not live on
Prithvi and Vishwaamitra's aim was to become Brahmarshi, so both left her
uncared, then Kanv Rishi found her and brought her up. She was married to king
Dushyant and had the son named Bharat.
--Once during his Tap, he met a king named Satyavrat who was looking for
somebody who could send him to Swarg with his mortal body. Satyavrat's Guru was
Vashishth with whom Vishwaamitra had an enmity. Vashishth refused to send him to
Swarg like this, so when he met Vishwaamitra, Vishwaamitra agreed and sent him
to Swarg with his mortal body. On Brahmaa's request he had to decline but he was
not ready to get him on Prithvi so he hung between Swarg and Prithvi and thus named Trishanku.
--After he became Maharshi, just to oppose Vashishth, he tested king Harishchandra for his truth. He is
called Kaushik also being the grandson of Kushik.
VISHWAAVASU - King of Gandharv

--Bhaagvat Puraan, 6/5
says that he had three heads, from one mouth he drank Som Ras, from the second
mouth he drank wine and from his third mouth he ate food. Once Brihaspati got angry with Indra, so Indra
appointed Twashtaa's son Vishwaroop as their Guru. But when he used to do Yagya
he used to give Aahuti to Asur also, because his mother was from Asur family, that is why he used to offer a share
to Asur also in his Yagya. Indra noticed that, he got frightened and he swiftly cut his all the three heads.
Vishwaroop's head which used to drink Somras became Papeehaa, the head which used to drink wine
became Gauraiyaa, and the head which used to eat food became Teetar [all three are Indian birds].
VISHWEDEV - Devtaa, Son of Vishweshaa
(Daughter of Brahmaa, Wife of Dharm) [Padm Puraan, 1/23]
--Brahmaa produced 5 women also besides 10 sons who became Prajaapati. These five women were Lakshmee, Saadhyaa,
Vishweshaa, Devee and Saraswatee. He gave all of them to Dharm.
--Lakshmee produced Som.
--Saadhyaa produced Saadhya named Devtaa. Their names are - (1) Bhav, (2) Prabhav, (3) Krishaaashwa, (4) Suvaha,

VRIDDHKSHATRA - King of Sindhu Desh
Married to - nnn
Children - 1 son - Jayadrath (Married to Dushalaa - Daughter of Dhritraashtra of Gaandhaaree)

give him a Var more that his son should be killed only by some prominent warrior
in the battlefield. But he was not satisfied with this so he himself gave Var to
him that "whoever will cause your head to fall on ground, his own head will
splinter into hundred pieces."
--That is why when Arjun killed him, he let it fall in Vriddhkshatra's lap. As
he was doing evening worship, he didn't know that his son's head had fallen in
his lap. As he rose the head fell on the ground, and his own head was splintered

Then He had to assume Raakshas' form and break her Sateetwa. When Vrindaa came
to know about this, she gave Shaap to Vishnu, "You become black stone." Vishnu
accepted the Shaap and said - "You gave me Shapp, I accepted it, now you must
accept my Var, "I will not accept anything without you. You will become Tulasee
plant and will grow abundantly in forest and I will come and stay there for some
time. That forest will be called Vrindaa van on your name." That is why Vishnu's

Yayaati gave justification for that but Shukra did not consider it proper and gave Shaap to him - "Go and
become very ugly looking old." Yayaati said - "It will affect your daughter also." Then Shukra
relaxed it saying that he could exchange it with somebody if the other person is ready to take it. Yayaati asked
his eldest son Yadu, he refused it bluntly. Then Yayaati gave him Shaap that there will not be any king in his lineage.

--How he was married to both? Once he was on hunting trip that he felt thirsty and looked for a well. He
saw a well, came near it in search of water but found somebody crying for help. He took the girl out. She was
without clothes, so he gave her own cloth to cover her body. She was Devayaanee. She requested him to marry her,
he married her. Devayaanee brought Sharmishthaa as her maid. Shukra warned him not to take anybody else to his bed.
--When Devayaanee had one son, Sharmishthaa also expressed him her desire to have child. Yayaati fulfilled her
desire. Seeing this Devayaanee returned to her father. Shukra asked Yayaati as why did he take a maid to his
bed. Shukra didn't agree to his justification and gave him Shaap to be an ugly old man. Yayaati also warned him
that it would affect his daughter too. At this Shukra relaxed his Shaap that he could exchange his old age to
young age if somebody is ready. He asked his all the sons but nobody got ready to exchange his youth with his
old age. Ultimately his youngest son Pooru gave his youth to his father in exchange of his old age. He appointed
him as the king after him.

Lok. Now, fortunately he fell where his daughter Maadhavee's four sons were doing Yagya. So all of them gave him their
