Jaya and Vijaya |
Jaya and Vijaya See also Bhaagvat Puraan, 7/1, Maanas, 1/7 Jaya and Vijaya's story comes in two places - in Bhaagvat Puraan and Tulasee's Maanas. Jaya ad Vijaya were the two gatekeepers of Vishnu. Once Sanakaadi Muni came to see Vishnu. Jaya and ijaya did not know them so they did not allow them to enter the Vaikunth Lok. At this Sanakaadi Muni got angry with them and cursed them - "You are not worthy to be the gatekeepers of Vishnu, go and be born as Daitya on Prithvi." Hearing this Vishnu came out and welcomed Sanakaadi Muni ad asked them what happened. Jaya and Vijaya fell on Sanakaadi Muni's feet and asked for their forgiveness. Vishnu said - "Hey Muni, You did all right to them. I ask for your forgiveness on their behalf." Sanakaadi Muni told Him the whole incident and said to Vishnu - "We just cursed them, now you can decide yourself what is to be done." After saying this they went away. Vishnu said to them - "Muni's Shaap cannot go waste. Now you have two options - one, you be born as Asur seven times as my Bhakt, or you may be born as Asur three times but as my strongest enemy. What do you want?" Jaya and Vijaya said - "Prabhu, We cannot live far from you for long so we would like to be born only three times on the Earth as your strongest enemies. One thing more, we should not forget our Gyaan when we are born on Prithvi and we should be killed by your hands only." Vishnu said - "So be it." So both gatekeepers of Vishnu, were born as Asur because of Sankaadi Muni's Shaap, three times and got their death through Bhagavaan all the three times. First they were born as Hiranyaaksh and Hiranykashyap (killed by Varaah Avataar and Narasinh Avataar respectively); second time they were born as Raavan and Kumbhkarn (both were killed by Raam); and third time they were born as Shishupaal and Dantavakra. The third time they were not born as Daitya as such, but still both were killed by Krishn. This was their last life so after this life they went to Vishnu's Param Dhaam. In Kali Yug, Jaya and Vijaya are free from their curse, and they can be seen as gatekeepers in Vishnu Temples and Temples affiliated with Vaishnavism. Statues of Jaya and Vijaya stand in the Temple of Venkateswar in Tirumala, the Temple of Jagannath in Puree, and the Temple of Ranganaath in in Srirangam.
