Mangal Dosh (Mangalee, or Kujaaa Dosh)-2
The most dreaded concept of
Mangal Dosh/Maanglik means early death of spouse or inharmonious
relationship with the spouse in the early years of marriage. A native is
treated as Maangalik when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and
12th Houses from the natal Ascendant or natal Moon. Some modern savants even
include these positions from Venus also. This way more that 80% of the human
beings will be graded as Maangalik. This concept is also far from the truth.
The said position of Mars in a
chart does not make a native Maangalik in case Mars is a functional benefic
for the natal chart. For the natal charts where Mars becomes a functional malefic
ie Virgo, Scorpio and Taurus ascendant charts, it can generate the results of
the so-called Maangalik Yog if the association of Mars is close/exact to the most
effective point of the house and the Lord of the House where Mars is posited, is
weak. There is no exception to this combination. However, the close trine aspect
of a functional benefic Jupiter and the third aspect of a functional benefic Saturn
are capable of warding off the evil results generated by Mars to a large extent.
The functional malefic planets as
per the Systems' Approach act identical to Mars in case these malefic planets form
close conjunction/aspect with the houses/planets signifying marital happiness.
Therefore, for understanding the true impact of Mars in a natal chart we have to
clearly understand the functional nature of planets.

When the Mars is with Raahu the Mangal Dosh is eliminated.
If one has an exalted Venus in the 7th house, the Mangal Dosh will not be effective.

One of the biggest misconceptions and fears in the Hindu society with
respect to marriage is the presence of Mangal Dosh or Kujaaa Dosh in the
chart of a boy or a girl. Even the various Shaastra of astrology differ as
to in which houses it is present, what the exceptions are and what the
effects and remedies are. According to some authorities Mars is placed in
the 1,2,4,7,8,12, from Lagna causes Kujaaa Dosh. Some authorities omit the
1st house and some others omit the 2nd house.
Some astrologers thump the table and quote Paraashar and Varaahamihir to
prove their point. Even the existing Shaastra and their translations are
not very pure! Take for example the Brihat Paraashar Horaa Shaastr. In
chapter 2 verse 5-7 we have the following: "Raam is the incarnation
of the Sun, Krishn of the moon, Narasimh that of Mars, Buddhd that of Mercury,
Vaaman that of Jupiter, Parashuraam that of Venus, Koorm that of Saturn,
Varaah that of Raahu and Matsya that of Ketu". Sounds great. However,
according to astrology Paraashar was the father of Ved Vyaas who wrote the
MBH. According to our calculations the MBH period was 2500 BC to 3200 BC.,
or around 1200 BC, according to the western historians. Buddha belonged to
the much later and fairly authentically recorded period. He died in 544
BC. Then how did Paraashar say that Buddha is the Avataar of Mercury more
than a millennium before? If he were forecasting then he would have clearly
stated that "Buddha Avataar will be born". Obviously some of the
people who wrote the Shaastra added a few things of their own!
Rishi Paraashar, in his Brihat Paraashar Horaa Shastra, chapter 81, verse 47 said the following:
"If Mars is placed in the Lagna, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th houses, without
any aspect or conjunction of the benefic planets, the husband of such a woman
will certainly have an early death."
So it is clear that if Mars has the aspect or association of a benefic, there is no Dosh.
Other exception as follows: "The Yog in which a woman takes birth and
becomes a widow, if a male takes birth, he also becomes a widower. If a
woman with the widowhood Yog marries a man with similar Yog, such Yog will
be cancelled." So the 2nd exception given by him is that this feared Dosh
is cancelled if both the girl and the boy have Mangal Dosh.
However by and large the majority of the astrologers include the 2nd house
also in the Mangal Dosh and thus accept 6 houses. As there are 12 houses
in a horoscope and as Mars in 6 houses causes Mangal Dosh, it simply means
that 50% of the people born have Kujaaa Dosh of some level. Hence it goes
without saying that this Mangala Dosha is not something which will ruin a
person, because it is not the intention of God to condemn half of mankind.
The prevalent misconceptions are that, if a person has Martian affliction
it will either ruin the marriage or will cause one's death or the death of
the partner. Especially if a girl has Kujaaa or Mangala Dosha, called "Mangalee",
she is looked upon as a devil by the mother-in-law.
Effects on Marriage -
The planet Mars symbolizes courage, aggression, vitality, confidence,
fighting spirit and warrior qualities. If Mars is placed in any of these 6
houses, it gives aggressive tendencies to either the person or the spouse.
In certain cases if Mars is malefic to the native, it also gives danger to
life, provided that other bad combinations are also present. These two are
the main negative qualities. Hence the first reason for the "Dosh
Complex" is that - in the olden days the ideal wife was regarded as one
who is meek, obedient and submissive. Hence a girl with the so called Martian
afflictions, who is likely to have courage and fighting spirit, was considered
by our MCP society as a girl with "Dosh".
The second possible reason for the "Dosh Complex" is that during the war
torn middle ages when a lot of the Shaastra were written, a "Martian person",
who is normally well built, courageous, aggressive and has fighting qualities, was a
prime candidate to be recruited by the king for his army and hence the chances of his
death or serious injury were quite strong. In the present changed circumstances it is
foolishness of the highest order to be scared simply because one has Mangal Dosh.
However, Mangal Dosh is not something that can be ignored. It does cause
marital discord. Before marriage it is very essential to match horoscopes
for Kujaaa Dosh. If a person has Kujaaa Dosh in the horoscope the spouse
must also have Kujaaa Dosh. This way the Dosh is cancelled. Otherwise both
should be without any Dosh. Various "authorities and experts" have
given a lot of exceptions and cancellations for the Dosh. They are so many
other Yog that almost everything is cancelled! The truth is that in majority
of the cases the so called exceptions and cancellations do not work.
PS Iyer's tips: In 1991 the late Sri PS Iyer, gave a discourse to several
budding aspirants of astrology in KN Rao's house. He was quite clear
in stating that Mangal Dosh is present in 6 houses. This Kujaaa Dosh must
be examined from the Moon, Venus and Saturn also. He even gave the details
of the percentage of Mangal Dosh in each house. In 8th house the Dosh is
full, in Lagna it is 1/2, in 7th it is 1/4, in 4th House it is 1/8 and in
12th and 2nd Houses it is 1/16. As per the exceptions and cancellations,
he was very specific about the following:
--No Dosh if Mars is in its its own house or exaltation house. No Dosh if
he is aspected by a benefic.
--If a strong benefic is placed in the 9th house then the Dosh of Mars in
the 7th and 8th is cancelled.
However he also advised that apart from the Mars, the planets Saturn, Sun
and Raahu also cause similar Dosha. From the point of view of causing Dosh,
if Mars causes 100% Dosh, Saturn causes 75% Dosh, Sun causes 50% Dosh and
Raahu causes 25% Dosh. These Dosh must also be evaluated similarly.
As per the Koot matching his advise was to give more importance to Din, Gana, Raashi,
Yoni and Rajju and less to the others. So much so for the Naadee Dosh fear!
The matching of horoscopes and especially the extent of Mangal Dosh is the job of an
experienced astrologer and must be done after carefully analyzing both the horoscopes.
Where Mangalik Dosh is Cancelled
(1) If Mars is placed in 2nd or 4th House in a female chart; or in 4th or
8th House in a male chart - no Mars Dosh.
(2) When Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio), or exalted (Capricorn) or
in the houses owned by planets supposed to be his friends (Sun, Jupiter, Moon)
Maangalik Dosh gets cancelled.
(3) If Mars is in the 2nd house and the 2nd House happens to be Gemini or Virgo
sign then the Maanglik Dosh gets cancelled.
(4) If the 4th House is occupied by Mesh or Vrishchik (Aries or Scorpio)
(5) If Mars is in 12th house but in Taurus, Libra then the Maangalik Dosh gets cancelled.
(6) If Mars is in 7th house in Kark (Cancer) or Makar (Capricorn) then the Maangalik
Dosh gets cancelled.
(7) If Mars is in 8th house but in Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meen (Pisces) no Dosh exists.
(8) For Cancer and Leo ascendant Mars is a Yog Kaarak (a beneficial influence) wherever it
may be no Dosh at all.
(9) If Mars is placed in Kumbh (Aquarius) or Sinh (Leo), no Mars Dosh
(10) For Kumbh (Aquarius) and Sinh (Leo) ascendants, if Mars is in the 4th or 8th house
then the Maangalik Dosh gets cancelled.
(11) If benefic Jupiter or Venus is in ascendant no Maangalik Dosh.
(12) If Mars is in conjunction or aspected by Jupiter or Moon no Dosh.
(13) If Mars is in conjunction aspected by Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Raahu then the Maanglik
Dosh does not exist.
(14) There will be no Mars Dosh if Mars is in conjunction with Jupiter, Moon (waxing phase),
or if it receives the aspect or conjunction of Mercury.
(15) There will be no Mars Dosh if Mars is in conjunction with Saturn, Raahu, or Ketu.
(Of course, the presence of so many malefics in vital houses concerning marriage might
affect marital bliss in other ways though Mars Dosh gets cancelled!).
(16) If the owner of the house in which Mars is placed (called “dispositor of Mars” in
astro-terminology) is in quadrants (1, 4, 7, or 10) or trines (1, 5, 9 houses),
then the Mars Dosh gets cancelled.
(17) For Kark (Cancer) and Sinh (Leo) Lagna or Raashi natives, there will be no Mars Dosh
regardless of the placement of Mars in the horoscope.

Cancellation of Mars Dosh
Cancellation will also happen, if---
Mars is in his own signs (Aries or Scorpio)
Mars is Exalted (in Capricorn)
Mars is in his Friends' (Sun, Jupiter and Moon) House -
Leo is the own House of the Sun,
Sagittarius and Pisces are the own Houses of Jupiter;
Cancer is the own House of Moon
Mars is in Saturn's House - Aquarius or Capricorn
If Mars is in Aries or Cancer or Libra or Capricorn (movable Sign) Signs,
and if these Signs are in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th House
from Lagna or the Raashi House (where Moon is situated); or
the House where Venus is situated, there is no Kujaa Doash
If Mars and Moon, or Mars and Saturn, or Mars and Raahu, or if Mars and
Ketu; or if Mars and Jupiter, or if Mars and Mercury
are in the same House, Kujaa Dosh is cancelled
If Mars is aspected by Jupiter, or Saturn Kujaa Dosh is cancelled
Mars in Venus signs (Taurus or Libra) in 4th or 7th house
Mars in the 2nd house but not in Mercury's signs (Gemini or Virgo)
Mars in the 2nd House from the Houses of Jupiter, or Mercury or Saturn.
Mars in the 2nd or 12th House from Lagna, or Moon House or Venus House
Kujaa Dosh is cancelled
Mars in the house owned by Sun (Leo), Moon (Cancer), or Saturn (Aquarius
and Capricorn)
Mars in 7th House (spouse's House) the spouse dies in the Mahaa Dashaa of
Kujaa.
But if that House is Aries or Cancer or Scorpio or Capricorn
- no Kujaa Dosh
Mars in 7th House, but not in Cancer or Capricorn
Mars in 8th house, but not in Sagittarius or Pisces, and house occupied by Mars is owned by Jupiter
Mars in the 8th House from Lagna, Moon or Venus; and that 8th House is
happened to be the own House of Jupiter - Sagittarius or Pisces
Mars in 12th House, but not in Taurus and Libra
Mars becomes Yog Kaarak for Cancer born or Leo born people.
For Aquarius Ascendant, if Mars is in the 4th or 8th House, his Maangaik Dosh is cancelled.
For Cancer or Leo or Capricorn Ascendants, no Mangal Dosh wherever Mars is situated
For Cancer ascendant it is 5th and 10th Lord and in 7th gets exalted and Yog
Kaarak Status.
For Leo ascendant it is 4th and 9th Lord. So it will give good result if deposited in 1, 4,
If Benefic Jupiter or Venus is in Ascendant – no Dosh.
If Mars is in conjunction with, or aspected by Jupiter or Moon – no Dosh.
If Mars is in conjunction with or aspected by Sun, Mercury, Saturn, or
Raahu, Maanglik Dosh does not exist.

In case of Mangalik Dosh we
must match the horoscope with another horoscope having similar Dosh so
that the effects get nullified between the couple. But, this is not KP
view. KSK says "don’t add oil to the fire instead throw sand on it to
extinguish the burning fire....."
Kujaa Dosh - Mars Affliction Affecting Married Life
--Mars in the 1st house, unless posited in Aries.
--Mars in the 4th, unless posited in Scorpio.
--Mars in the 7th, unless posited in Capricorn or Pisces.
--Mars in the 8th, unless posited in Cancer
--Mars in the 12th, unless posited in Sagittarius.
Kujaaa Dosh, or Mars
affliction, is an astrological condition which negatively affects a
person’s married life and domestic harmony. It is also one of the few
astrological terms familiar to the Indian public. It occurs when Mars is
in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house unless it is posited in a sign
designated as an exception for that particular house. The reason Kujaa Dosh
is so well known in India is that nearly all parents there consult an
astrologer before arranging a marriage for their child. This is done, to a
great extent, in order to find out if the condition exists so they may
take measures to neutralize the problem before it has a chance to create
misery. The effect of Kujaa Dosh is to cause the person to be somehow
victimized in his marriage. This can, of course, occur in any number of
ways, but ultimately one is likely to end up divorced and generally through
no obvious fault of one’s own. The person will also have to endure hardships
in the marriage generated by the spouse.
The way out of this problem
is for a person with Kujaa Dosh to marry another who also has it. A person
with Kujaa Dosh does not have the nature to victimize his spouse, and
therefore if both partners have the condition, its effect is neutralized.
This is a simple procedure in India, where, until only very recently, all
marriages were arranged at an early age. However, for Westerners Kujaa Dosh
presents a major obstacle because of the way the condition works in relation
tour culture, where a person chooses his own spouse. The mechanics of Kujaa
Dosh are such that it causes a person to be attracted to a partner who by his
very nature cannot blend or function compatibly for any great length of time
with that person. Therefore, one is quite simply at the mercy of his fate. Yet
perhaps the most significant problem is that a person with Kujaa Dosh will not
feel much physical attraction or any special chemistry for another who also has
the condition. Therefore, even with the knowledge of this situation, a Westerner
is destined for trouble unless he is wise or patient enough to find a mate who
also has Kujaa Dosh, even though the great excitement most people seek may be
missing.
Kujaa Dosh (also known as
Mangal Dosh, since Mangal is another name for Mars) is a reliable
astrological indicator and often reveals which partner out of a divorced
couple was most put upon, deceived, or betrayed.
It should also be mentioned
that there are astrologers who consider the condition to occur when Mars
is in the 2nd house rather than the 1st. The author does not agree with
this school of thought, especially since Mars in the 1st negatively
aspects the 7th, which is the house of marriage.
There is no Kujaa-dosham in
any of the following case and Mars does not harm.
No Kujaa Dosh
The great Saint-Astrologers of ancient times mentioned in a Shlok :
Ark, Indu Kshetra Jaatanam Kujaa-Dosho Na Vidyate;
Swa, Uchch, Mitra Bhajataanam Peedko Na Bhaat Kujaa :
1. If Mars is in his own house; Mesh (Aries) and Vrishchik (Scorpio)
- they are his own houses
2. If Mars stays in one of his friends’ houses, Kujaa Dosh is not applicable;
Kark (Cancer) is own house of Moon (Chandra); Sinh (Leo) is own house of Ravi
(Sun); Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meen (Pisces) are own houses of Guru (Jupiter).
3. If Mars is in the own house of Shani; namely Makar (Capricorn) and Kumbh (Aquarius).
4. Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Tulaa (Libra), and Makar (Capricorn) are movable
signs (Char Raashi); if Mars stays in one of these houses and that Char Raashi
(House) is 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12th House from the house of birth (Lagna) or the House
of Moon (Raashi) or the house where Shukra (Venus) stays, there is no Kujaa Dosh;
Mars does not harm.
5. If Moon and Kujaa are together in the same house, there is no Kujaa Dosh.
6. If Shani (Saturn) and Kujaa (Mars), or if Kujaa and Raahu or if Kujaa and Ketu
pair in the same house.
7. If Mars and Guru (Jupiter), or Mars and Budh (Mercury) are together in the same
house. Or if Guru or Budh are aspecting (seeing) Mars.
8. If a person is born in Kark (Cancer), or Sinh (Leo), or Makar (Capricorn) Lagna
9. If Mars is in 2nd house from the houses of Guru (Jupiter), Budh (Mercury) or Shani (Saturn).
10. If Shani (Saturn) is aspecting (seeing) Mars (Kujaa).
11. If Lagna (birth house) or Moon (Chandra) or Shukra (Venus) is in the houses of Venus
(Shukra), Vrishabh (Taurus) or Tulaa (Libra), and if Mars is in 4th or 7th house from
the above.
12. If Mars is in 2nd or 12th House from Lagnam (ASC) or Chandra (Moon) or Shukra
(Venus) and those houses are own houses of Budha (Mercury), Mithun (Gemini) or
Kanyaa (Virgo).
13. If Mars (Kujaa) is in 4th or 7th or 12th house from Lagna (ASC) or Chandra (Moon)
or Shukra (Venus) and those houses are own houses of Shukra (Venus), Vrishabh (Taurus)
or Tulaa (Libra).
14. If Mars is in 8th house from Lagna, or Moon or Venus and that 8th house is the own
house of Guru (Jupiter), Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meen (Pisces).
15. The 7th house from Lagna (birth house = ASC= ascendant) is the house of spouse; if
Mars (Kujaa) is in 7th house, the spouse may die in periods of Kujaa (Mars). If that
7th house is Mesh (Aries) or Kark Cancer)
or Vrischik (Scorpio) or Makar (Capricorn), no Kujaa-Dosh.
Well-known astrologers of
present times, Relangi, Tangirala, Pidaparthi Poornaih wrote in their
Panchaang (Ephemeris) and books, that Kujaa Dosh is not applicable if
there is Kujaa Dosh from Lagna and from Moon house and Venus house – all
three houses in same horoscope.
Other Related Dosh
The cause difference of opinion, disagreement, dispute, divorce etc. among
couple is not left to Mars alone, any planet can cause such undesirable
effect provided they happen to be deposited in such a positions e.g. -
The sub-lord of that planet is significator of 6 or 10 or 12.
If the same sub-lord also signifies 2 or 7 or 11, the problem will be there
only for a short period of time.
The sub-lord of a planet is Mars and Mars is significator of 6 or 10 or 12,
there will be violence and separation
The sub-lord of a planet is Saturn, silence and remain dumb-sit and strike

Marriage related problem should not
be connected to Mars Dosh in every case- See below mentioned cases:-
Second Marriage -
Second marriage is indicated if the following two conditions are simultaneously satisfied:
(1) The sub-lord of the 7th cusp is deposited in a dual sign or in the
constellation of a planet in or owning a dual sign or if the sub-lord of
the 7th cusp is Mercury; and
(2) The sub-lord of the 7th cusp is also a significator of either of the houses 2 or 11.
If any of the above two conditions is not satisfied, then second marriage is denied.
(It is to be noted that
signification of 7th house is omitted for the purpose of 2nd marriage.)

Abnormal/unnatural sex is shown if the
Sub-lord of the 5th House signifies 7th, 8th and 9th Houses and also Mars and or
Saturn are also involved...as per KP.
For information, I had only expressed a possibility, that the desire to
marry could probably be absent due to this, as one of the reasons...
