Mundak Upanishad - Comments - 1-1-9

Shlok 9
From Him, the Absolute Truth, who includes all knowledge and whose discipline and practice are made up of knowledge, comes the form of Brahm, Hiranyagarbh and the principles of name, color and substance.

Comments
Swami Rama says that first-born, Brahm, Eeshwar, or Hiranyagarbh and the individual souls, including all creatures and their food, emanate only from One. One should understand this clearly that how these terms are used.

Sa-Gun Brahm, or the Cosmos, in relation to Maayaa, surveys the whole Universe. The creative thought is essentially knowledge. To be creative in the world means to create something with materials at hand, such as building a table out of wood. Jeev (soul), the individual soul, associated with A -Vidyaa (ignorance) has limitations, while Brahm has no limitations. Additionally, because the individual soul is is associated with A-Vidyaa, he (the person whose soul it is) has to make efforts, do Tap, or austerities to regain his original identity or prestige, and to re-establish himself in his essential nature.

As this effort is called Tap for a person, but for Brahm it is spontaneous and effortless. Why? Because Brahm is not affected by Maayaa; and Maayaa is only one of the powers of Brahm which becomes known as A-Vidyaa when it is related to the individual and his entanglement with the law of Karm (action). That is why the individual has to make these sincere efforts. Human effort is always human, but the knowledge one uses to make these efforts is always Divine. Any sincere effort made by an individual with Divine knowledge will help him to break the cover of A-Vidyaa and become free from the bondage created by it.

Jeev (individual soul) is endowed with all the qualities of Brahm; but Jeev, because of being associated with A-Vidyaa, thinks itself to be limited. There is a vast difference between human creation and Divine creation. Human creation is dependent on the existence of something different and separate from the doer; while Brahm's creation does not have to depend on any other force to manifest the Universe.

When Jeev has broken the cover of A-Vidyaa, it realizes its true Self and becomes one (united) with Brahm.

The Upanishad gives a Subtle definition of cosmic ignorance and A-Vidyaa. To be creative in the world is to be precise and mechanistic; while to be creative in relation to Brahm is spontaneous and effortless.

Without Tap, one cannot break the cover of A-Vidyaa. Tap is that discipline that helps one grow, unfold and purify the way of the soul. This discipline should not be an imposed one; but should be an accepted one by the individual as a matter of spiritual delight.
