4-Miscellaneous Stories

Here are some stories as how innocent Bhakt got Siddhi or Darshan.

(1) There was an illiterate non-Braahman. He approached a Guru to initiate him to penance with a Mantra. The Guru tested him and found him to be dull and incapable of understanding anything or pronouncing any Mantra, so he refused to give him any Mantra. The person was pestering daily and day and night. Unable to bear this torture, the Guru asked him to utter "atra" (here) "tatra" (there). The poor fellow with full involvement, belief and faith concentrated on these two Mantra for years. After several years one day by mistake he pointed out to a distant tree and chanted "atra". The tree immediately moved to the place where he was sitting. He was pleased that something happened to the word he uttered. Then again he pointed out and chanted "tatra". The tree moved to the distant place.

Very pleased he came to the same Guru who could not recognize him initially but did after he narrated their initial meeting. With a sarcastic look he asked him what happened to his "Upadeesham of Mantra" (initiation) . The poor person narrated the whole event. The Guru disbelieved and told him that it could not be true when he himself could not do it even after several years of penance. He asked the poor man to demonstrate. Having no other way the Shishya pointed out at the Guru and chanted "tatra" and immediately the Guru was bundled out to the distant place he showed. Again he pointed to the original place and chanted "atra" and the Guru returned. This subdued the ego of the Guru that he was greater.

What is needed is full faith, determination and involvement more than mere chanting like a parrot with several ways like "kramam, Jata, ganam" etc.

(2) Once there was a man wandering in the forest that he saw some people reciting Devee Mantra. he could not undertan all the words in it, but he liked one word "Shreem" and he started repeating it innocently without any Bhakti, without knowing the meaning and without having any kind of faith (how could he have faith when he did not know the purpose of that Mantra). It was a play for him. When he was enjoying its repetition, one day Devee appeared before him and said - "I am very pleased with you, ask what do you want?" That man got stunt. he never expected such a thing. Then Devee said - "What you were repeating was my Mantra. I am very pleased with your devotion to that Mantra, so you ask me anything."

What a luck? When one can have Darshan of God without knowing anything, without any Bhakti and Bhaavanaa, then what to say about with Bhakti and Bhaavanaa?

(3) A Guru had several disciples. A disciple noticed that his Guru has taught some higher material to his other classmates but not to him. So the Disciple went to his Guru and said to him - "Master, why didn't you teach me any precept? I know that my friends who practice with a great master have to observe many precepts."

Master said with compassion - "If you have awareness of your mind all the time, you don't need any precept or rule. You only think, speak and act good."
The Disciple asked - "Why other masters have so many disciples and you only keep a few?"
Master replied - "There are three types of disciples I will not keep. The overturned vessel cannot receive any teachings. The vessel which has a hole in it will leak and cannot hold any teachings and the tainted vessel will adulterate the teachings."
The Disciple said - "No wonder you always remain poor. Other masters who have so many disciples are very rich and have the temples built by disciples."

Master said reluctantly - "If I keep thinking of getting more disciples and building a big temple, then my mind is always outside of me and so confused. I prefer to keep my mind within so that I am always peaceful and bliss with the divine.
