Raam Navamee
Chaitra Shukla 9

Falls on Chaitra Shukla Navamee (9th) - after Chaitra Nava Durgaa, or Chaitra Nava Raatri. On this day Raam, the 7th Avataar of Vishnu, was born in Ayodhyaa. It is not a very noisy and showy birthday like Krishn Janmaashtamee, but still is celebrated in a modest way. Since this day are celebrated two festivals - Raam Navamee and the last day of Chaitra Nava Durgaa, Nava Durgaa celebrations takes it over. Many people keep fast on this day, while many finish their Nava Raatri fasts on 8th day and feed young girls and boys on this day.  They cook Halavaa and Pooree and feed Braahman's Kanyaa (younger than 10 years of age girls) and Langar (up to 10-12 years of age boys). You will see many well-dressed young children roaming here and there, going to different houses and feeding themselves there. They give them Dakshinaa too.

Many people read Raam Janm story from Raam Charit Maanas today and worship Raam, Lakshman and Seetaa.
