Kuntee

Kuntee was the daughter of the King Shoorsen and Vasudev's one of the six sisters. King Kuntibhoj was Shoorsen's friend and had no child of his own. So Shoorsen gave his daughter to him. In Shoorsen's house she was named Prithaa, but when she came to Kuntibhoj's house, she was named as Kuntee.

Kuntee and Durvaasaa Muni
When Kuntee was in Kuntibhoj's house, Kuntibhoj received Durvaasaa Muni. He handed over the responsibility of his care to Kuntee. He got very happy with Kuntee's services and asked her to ask for something. Kuntee said - "You know everything of past, present and future, give me the same which is useful for me in the future." Durvaasaa Jee gave her a Mantra and said - "This Mantra is capable of attracting any Devtaa you wish to call and fulfill your wish you will express to him."

After some time once Kuntee offered water to Soorya Dev and continued to look at him for some time. Then she moved her eyes from him and got busy in her house work. One day again she offered the water to Soorya Dev and continued to look at him. It just struck her mind to test Durvaasaa's Mantra, so she meditated upon Soorya Dev and recited the Mantra. She saw Soorya Dev coming to her. She got scared to see him. Soorya Dev asked - "Kuntee, Why have you called me? What can I do for you?" Kuntee said - "I do not want anything, I just tested the Mantra. Now you may go."

Soorya Dev said - "I cannot go without giving you anything, this will be insult to Durvaasaa's Mantra. Ask what do you want?" "I really do not want anything." Soorya Dev said - "I give you a son." Kuntee got more scared, she said - "I am unmarried, what people say to me?" Soorya Dev said - "Do not worry, you will still remain unmarried. This boy will be born with his own Kavach (armor) and Kundal (earrings), so you need not to worry about his safety." He gave her a son who had a Kavach on his body and a pair of earrings in his ears, and went away. Now he was Kuntee's problem. She put him in box and flowed him in Gangaa River.

Fortunately, Shaantanu's Saarathee (chariot driver) Adhirath was taking bath in the river, he heard the sound of crying of a baby. He saw a box floating on the river. He got it, opened it and found a beautiful newborn boy in it. He brought him home. He and his wife Raadhaa did not have any child, so they brought him up as their own child. Because of being the son of Raadhaa, he was called Raadheya.

Later, after her marriage to Paandu, she used this Mantra  to get five sons for him - Yudhishthir from Dharm Raaj, Bheem from Pavan Dev, Arjun from Indra Dev, and Nakul and Sahadev for Maadree from Ashwinee Kumaar.

Kuntee and Karn
First time Kuntee saw her first-born son when he came to challenge Arjun while Drone was demonstrating Paandav and Kaurav's skills to Bheeshm. The occasion was so delicate that neither she called him as her son, nor she could hold herself. But at least she knew that her son was well and alive. Second time she herself went to him to ask to join his younger brothers, just before the war was to take place, but he politely refused to accept her offer as he was indebted to Duryodhan and he did not want to die with a debt on his head. He was the one who gave him shelter when he was standing alone cursing his lineage.

Kuntee's Life
Kuntee remained very unfortunate throughout her life. First she had to leave her own father's house and come to Kuntibhoj's house. As she got married to Paandu, he went for winning the kingdoms. After he came back, he went to forest and got a Shaap of a Muni which took his life. After this she brought the children to Hastinaapur where she always faced one or the other problems from Dhritraashtra and his
children - at Laakshaa Grih, then at Chausar game, then war. When Yudhishthir was crowned as the King of Hastinaa Pur, she lived with them for some years. After a while she went to forest along with Dhritraashtra and Gaandhaaree and died in a jungle fire.

She never treated Dhritraashtra's children as other's children but both Kaurav and Paandav somehow could not sit together.
