Some colors are very important in a society's life and have their own meaning. Let us read about RED color what does it depict in various situations in India.

1. Red Letter Day
The most important days which cannot be forgotten are called RED letter days. August 15th is a red-letter day in the Indian History. India got independence on that day. Similarly in the life of people, the day they got their first appointment could be said a red letter day.

2. Red Color as Warning or Caution
RED color is invariably used as a warning either in the road or in the railway track etc. Any person waving a red cloth depicts about a danger ahead and is well honored. On Railway track it is not necessary that only a railway staff can wave the red cloth to tell about the danger ahead, anyone can do it if he thinks that there is a danger on the tack ahead.. Similar rules apply o the roads too. A RED flag raised is called RED alert. Even while transporting heavy things or overloaded vehicle a RED flag is tied to them to indicate as a caution.

4. Red Ribbon Express
Every body knows about the Red Ribbon Express, a special train, informing about AIDS.

5. Red Cross Society
There is a Red Cross Society which is a volunteer-led humanitarian organization that helps people in their crisis, whoever and wherever they are. This organization enables vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities, and when the crisis is over, they help people recover and move on with their lives.

6. Red Color In Offices
In India all Post Office buildings are in dark red color. One can easily recognize from far and distance. Even post office "Letter Boxes" in which people can drop their mails to be collected are also of red color and because of this re color associated with post office, many times less educated people or village people call it "Red Box" (Laal Dibbaa). On account of this very often dark red was told as Post office read.

In USA all Post Office buildings are of red bricks. They can also be identified from far and distance.

All Fire Trucks in USA are of red color.

7. In Uniforms
In India, the peons of the District Collector, Mayor etc all wear their dress with a some kind of red color strip, apron, etc.

8. Agni Dev
The color of Agni is yellow, but theekkanal is red in color. When iron block is heated to make different items, after keeping it in fire for some time it becomes red hot in color. The Red Hot phrase has emerged from this.

9. Rising and Setting Sun
Rising and setting Sun appear as a reddish ball. Normally when the Sun rises in the sky, he appears as very dark orange resembling to red.

10. Bull and the Red Color
Although it is said that the bulls do not recognize the red color, but they feel allergic to red. In Bull fights the defender holds a red cloth, inviting the bull to him. Bull fight is a specialty of Spain.

11. The Red Soil
Normally earth is dark brown, or light brown color, but on heating become reddish. The bricks, the roof tiles are example of this. But in certain areas the soil is reddish in color , in southern India in most places the soil is red. Green plants grown in red soil look very beautiful and picturesque.

12. Red Light
To identify taller objects, red lights are fitted over them, for example, buildings for all Mobile towers are fitted with red light.

13. Red Light Area
There is a Red Light area in most large cities It is a place where prostitutes live. They are illegal.

14. RED Blood
In humans the color of blood is red. Although other lower species it can be green or white or yellow.

15. No Red Food
There are some people who do not eat food items of red color, such as beetroot, tomato, carrot,  watermelon, red guava, red grapefruit, red Lentils (Masoor Daal), even pumpkin - they can eat the green one but not the ripen one as it becomes red after ripen.

17. Pattum Vaalum.
When heroes are honored they are given with sword and Veerali Pattu (cloth), red in color.

18. In Religious Ceremonies - Marriage, Birth etc
Very few men wear red dresses at any time of their life. Light red, dark red cloths are worn by women frequently, with added designs. It is very common for a bride to wear red Saaree or dress of red color at her marriage occasion in northern India. She also wears a red dot of Kumkum and fill her hair partings with red Kumkum after the marriage - the bridegroom does that as a sign of marriage.

With so many changes, still while Tally is tied by the bridegroom, the bride sits on father's lap and she wears a dark red Pudavai called Koorappudavai of 18 muzham which is offered to her to wear by the bridegroom after Kanyaa Daan. The cost of Koorappudavai is always borne by the bridegroom side and sometimes cost of one Talee also.

The Kumkum is deep red prepared by using turmeric and lemon. The pure Kumkum will not have any effect on skin. If a married Hindu woman is seen with out Kumkum in the centre of her forehead, every body will make her recollect it to wear. The size of the Kumkum dot varies, in Tamilnaadu elderly woman wear very large dot. In Kerala the women wear the Kumkum dot to the size of the finger only. In northern India it also varies - the young girls wear it very small, of a size of large mustard seed, some wear it 3-4 mm diameter size, but very large one is not worn now-a-days. In Bangaal women still wear the large ones. In southern India, it is customary to offer Kumkum to any married woman coming to the house when she goes back. Although in fashion, may women wear shiny and other materials' dot, and of many colors matching to their dresses.

In southern India a male child is dressed in red on his first birth day (Attapurnnal) when taken to temple.

19. Rakt Chandan
Normally sandalwood is somewhat of cream color, but there is red color sandalwood also. Red sandal paste and powder are used in many Aayurvedic preparations and religious ceremonies.

20. Ugra Devee
Normally Ugra Devee's idols are decorated by wearing red color skirt. Red color blood stains or tongue is seen with them. An example is Pratyanga Devee.

21. Kathkalee Dance and Red Color
Kathakalee dance is very amous dance of southern India. More red is used in that dance for Kathee, but for other Vesh also red is used, but less.
