Names of Rivers in Scriptures

Alaknandaa River - One of the four branches of Gangaa River that flows southward. It is near Badaree Naath Jee in north of India in Himaalaya mountains.

Asiknee River - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas). Present river Chinaab. This is the old name of River Chinaab, which starts in Kaashmeer, and flows into Paakistaan portion of Panjaab. This name was also changed to Chandrabhaagaa from which the word Chinaab originated.

Avantikaa - River

Betavaa River - Flows in MP near Bhojeshwar Temple in Bhojpur city in MP.

Bhadraa River - This river later meets Tung River and becomes Tungbhadraa River.

Brahmputra River - Flows through the Aasaam valley is a remarkable river in the world. It is 3,000 km long from its source in Himaalaya to the junction with the Meghanaa. Before reaching Aasaam proper, it passes through gorges over 5,000 m deep. It is broader 1,600 km from the sea than is the Rhine near its mouth. When snow melts and rainy season comes it increases dramatically. At Gauhaatee, in Aasaam, it is only 1.5 km wide. It often gets flooded.

Byaas (Vyaas) River (Hyphasis) - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Byaas).

Chandrabhaagaa River - Present river Chinaab. One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas). Its another name is Asiknee also. Later this name was changed to Chandrabhaagaa, from which the word Chinaab is originated. Chandrabhaagaa River starts in Kashmeer, from Baralachlaa pass, and becomes Chandrabhagaa at Tandee and is renamed as Chinaab in Doda District of Jammoo and Kashmeer and then flows into Paakistaan portion of Panjaab. It was called Chandrabhaaga in Vaidik times.

This river is named Chandrabhaagaa at the confluence of Chandra and Bhaagaa Rivers at Tandee located in upper Himaachal Pradesh. It forms the boundary of Rechanaa and Jech. Another Rivr from five rivers, Jhelam joins it in Timmoo; and yet another of five river Raavee at Ahmadpur Sial. Then it merges with another of five rivers, Satalaj near Uch Shareef (Alexandria), Paakistaan, thus forming the Panchnad. Th fifth river Vyaas joins Satalaj near Feerozpur (in India). After that this Chinaab River joins Sindhu River (Indus River) in Mithaankot (in Paakistaan). It is 960 kms long.

Charmanvatee River - Chambal River

Chinaab River - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas). Also called Asiknee and later Chandrabhaagaa.

Dhaulee Gangaa - A river in north in Himaalaya on whose banks one of the four Dhaam, Badaree Naath Jee, is situated. The four Dhaam are Badaree Naath, Jagannaath Puree, Raameshwaram and Dwaarakaa Puree.

Drishdwatee River - A River in Saptsindhu region, probably Chautang River of today in Hariyaanaa.

Gandakee River - Mentioned in Padm Puraan, 3/3, and Padm Puraan, 4/4 as a Teerth. Here are found Shaalgraam stones. It is on the way to Neelgiri Parvat and is known as Shaalgraamee or Naaraayanee River. In the olden times it appeared from from the droplets of Brahmaa's cheek. Who worships these stones marked with circles, is never again.

Gangaa River (see also Tri-pathgaa) - It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree) - the most sacred river for Hindu. The three most sacred cities, Haridwaar, Prayaag and Vaaraanasee are situated on its banks. It is sacred because its water is free from bacteria and c ould be kept for years. Originally Aarya lived in Saptsindhu area, west of the plain of Gangaa. As they moved to east, they found Gangaa and were thrilled to find it. The first Aarya King to discover it was Jahnu and the second was Bhageerath. That is why Gangaa is known as Jaahnavee and Bhaageerathee.

Two fables were created around the discovery of Gangaa. The first one was related to Bhageerath, that he prayed Gangaa to descend from the Heaven. Gangaa said - "I can come there but my force will be so much that the Earth would become a great mudslide." Then Bhageerath prayed Shiv for its solution. Shiv suggested that he would first receive it on his head and then will release it with less force. And that is what he did. Another story was around Jahnu and because of that it is called Jaahnavee - daughter of Jahnu. Another story was written that the same Gangaa River became the wife of the King Shaantanu, who bore him a son named Devavrat (Bheeshm).

The holiest River of Bhaarat Varsh. Its source is said to be Gangotree. In its early part it is known as Alaknandaa, then it becomes Gangaa and flows through Rishikesh, Haridwaar, Garhmukteshwar, Kaanpur etc and meets Yamunaa at Allaahaabaad at Sangam and goes to Kaashee, Bihaar and meets sea in Haavadaa (Bangaal). She is called by Bhaageerathee, Jaahnavee, Sursari, Mandaakinee (there is another river also named as Mandaakinee) etc names.

Gautamee Gangaa - A lot of importance has been described of this river in Brahm Puraan. There are many Teerth on this river - Naageshwar, Pratishthaan, Maatri Teerth. Many Devtaa and people have done Tapasyaa on her shores. Shukraachaarya Jee did it for Shiv and got Mrit Sanjeeanee Vidyaa from him.

Godaavaree River - A River in southern India. It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree). This sacred and the second largest river of India originates from Tryambak in Naasik District of Mahaaraashtra State in Western Ghaat. It flows from West to East through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnaatak, Udeesaa (Orissa) and falls in the sea in Andhra Pradesh in Bay of Bengal. It has many pilgrimage centers on its banks. Kaaveree is down south then as we go northward we find Krishnaa, Godaavaree, then Mahaanadee and then Narmadaa. It goes through Dandak Van where Raam stayed with His brother and wife while in exile. Here He met Sharabhang Muni also. Godaavaree is regarded as another Gangaa. Gautam Rishi did Tapasyaa here. Gautam Rishi asked Gangaa to come there, but Gangaa told that she could not have come there unless Shiv is there, so Shiv also had to come there. Shiv came there and Gangaa flowed there with the name Godaavaree. See also Panch Raam Kshetra

Gomatee River - A River in UP. It flows through Lakhnaoo. Gomate is also the original name of River Gomal in Paakistaan.

Ikshumatee River - Here Kapil Muni lived and Sauveer king was going to see him. On the way Jad Bharat preached him Paramaarth. (Naarad Puraan, 1/21)

Iraavatee River - The original name of Raavee River in Panjaab, Paakistaan and India; and one Iraawadee River is in Brahmaa (Myaanmaar, in Burmaa) too.

Jaahnavee     see    Gangaa  - Another name Gangaa River. Because Jahnu in rage filled her water in his Kamandal and later released it from his ears on the request of Devtaa, he regarded as his daughter and she was called Jaahnavee.

Jhelam (Hydaspes) - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Byaas). Before it was called Vitastaa River.

Kaaveree River - It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree). It flows from west to east through the states of Karnaatak and Tamilnaadu in southern part of India. Flowing through Mysore, it falls in Kumbaakonam sea in Tamilnaadu State. It has been in mention at several places. Kaaveree is down south then as we go northward we find Krishnaa, Godaavaree, then Mahaanadee and then Narmadaa.

Kosee River - There are two rivers in Asia which are called "Rivers of sorrows" - Huaang Ho River in China, and Kosee River in Bihaar, in India. Huaang Ho does lots of harm to China and Kosee does the same to Bihaar. There are causes of widespread human suffering. Its old name is Kaushikee River. Originated from Mount Sheesh Pangmaa in Tibet, the "River of Gold" runs through 1/3rd eastern part of Nepal, and comes down to Bihaar to meet Gangaa River. Records show that it has changed its course in Bihaar about 70 miles (120 Kilometers) westwards during last 250 years. In Nepal, it is called "Doodh River" (River of Milk) because it is very frothy, boiling and whipped foamy white.

Krishnaa River - A river in southern India.

Krishnvenaa River - Padm Puraan, 3/3, Devhrid is its source and it is near Mandaakinee River.

Kshipraa River - Flows through Ujjayinee city (Avantee) in MP. 

Madhu Gangaa - 400 meters from Kedaar Naath

Mahaanadee River - Kaaveree is down south then as we go northward we find Krishnaa, Godaavaree, then Mahaanadee and then Narmadaa. It falls through Udeesaa and falls in Bay of Bengal.

Mandaakinee River - Its old name Payoshnee. It is mentioned at several places and its location also varies. One Mandaakinee is on the way to Badaree Naath Jee. This stream joins Gangaa River in hills itself. There is another Mandaakinee River which is mentioned in Maanas while Raam was in exile - He stayed there for a while. It is located on Chitrakoot Parvat in MP - north to Godaavaree.

Narmadaa River - A very holy river. It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree). This river comes out from Jabalpur, and goes through present MP state. It is very holy river. Thousands of Teerth are described in Naarad Puraan on the banks of this river. Mahishmatee Puree was also situated on its banks. Sahastrabaahu used to live here. Raavan was worshipping Shiv Jee here only when he came to fight with Sahastrabaahu and Sahastrabaahu flowed river's water upward and his Poojaa materials flowed in that water. Kaaveree is down south then as we go northward we find Krishnaa, Godaavaree, then Mahaanadee and then Narmadaa.

Pampaa River - There is a Pampaa River also where Balaraam Jee went while he was on his Teerth Yaatraa (pilgrimage) at the time of Mahaabhaarat war.

Raavee River (Purushnee) - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas).

Saraswatee River

Sarayoo River - Mentioned in Raamaayan. It flows near Ayodhyaa in UP. Its mention is mostly found in Raamaayan in reference of Dasharath and Raam. Raam and the whole Ayodhyaa was absorbed in its water only in the end.

Satalaj River - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Byaas). Its old name is Shatadru, Shatudri, or Shutudri, because it flowed in hundred channels.

Shaktimatee River - Shaktimatee River was somewhere in Chedi Desh. Chedi Desh was ruled first by Uparichar Vasu and later Shishupaal.

Shipraa River - is a lake in Himaalaya.

Sindhu River - It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree). Sindhu River flows in the western part of Bhaarat, now as Paakistaan. It starts from Kaashmeer, India and flows through Panjaab and Sindh regions of Paakistaan. It is on the banks of this River that Hindu religion and culture began. The Hindu is a corrupt word of Sindhu. Its no part is in Bhaarat now.

Son River - It flows in present Bihar state.

Sooktimatee River - This river flowed near Uparichar Vasu's kingdom Chedi Desh. She had two children, twins, one son and one daughter (Girikaa) from Kolaahal mountain.

Sursari - "Sur" means Devtaa and "Sari" means river, therefore Sursari means River of Devtaa. Another name of Gangaa River, because she used to flow only in Dev Lok before coming to Prithvi Lok.

Taamraparnee River - Name of a river in India. It is the name of a river flowing through Tirunelvelee. It is found its water has more content of copper, hence the name Taamraparnee.

Taaptee River - She is the daughter o Soorya Dev and sister of Yam Raaj and Shanaishchar. Her name was Tapatee. Once she caught up a quarrel with her sister, both cursed each other to be river and flowed in Bhaarat Varsh as Taaptee.

Tamasaa River - The river Tonse, rising in the Riksha mountains, and falling into the Ganges.

Tripathagaa  - "Tri" means three, and "Path" means ways, and "Gaa" means "which goes", so Tripathagaa means "Which has three paths". Another name of Gangaa, because she flows through three Lok - in Dev Lok with the name of Sursari, in Mrityu Lok with the name of Gangaa, and in Paataal Lok with the name of Vaitaranee (see below).

Tung River - This river later meets Bhadraa River and becomes Tungbhadraa River.

Tungbhadraa River - Tungbhadraaa River is the river named after the meeting two rivers - Tung and Bhadraa. That is in Kudalee near Shimogaa in Karnaatak.

Vaitaranee River - The fabled river flowing between the Earth and the land of the Dead.

Varadaa River - Name of a river. The name of the present Vardhaa City is derived from Varadaa River's name.

Vipaashaa River - Original name of River Vyaas or Byaas - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas)

Virajaa River - In Padm Puraan, 5/35, Vashishth Jee says to Dileep - "The upper limit of Prakriti is Virajaa River, but it has no limit below it."

Vitastaa River - Original name of Jhelam River - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Vyaas)

Vyaas (Byaas) River (Hyphasis) - One of the five rivers of Panjaab (Raavee, Chinaab, Jhelam, Satalaj, Byaas). Alexander, in 326 BC, went back to his country from this river after inhabiting a city, named Bucephala, in the memory of his horse across the river.

Yamunaa River - It is one of the seven holy rivers of Bhaarat (Gangaa, Yamunaa, Sindhu, Saraswatee, Godaavaree, Narmadaa, Kaaveree) whose source is said to be Yamunotree, comes down through Dehlee (Delhi), Mathuraa and meets Gangaa River at Ilaahaabaad at Sangam. She is the daughter of Soorya Dev.

Some Confluences Described in Scriptures

Confluence of river Gangaa and Yamunaa (Allaahaabaad), Saraswatee being Antar-vaahinee has been described by Kaali Daas in his Raghu Vansh.
Confluences of river Taamraparnee and Ghatanaa, in South Tamil Naadu, Chitraa, Shyaamaa, Karuppaa and Sangama with sea in the three forms of Gayatri, Savitri and Saraswatee at Aattoor has been described in Taamraparnee Mahaatmya in Shaiv Puraan.
