Krishn Discourses Arjun - Anugeetaa-7 - Braahman's Discourse-4 The Braahman further said - "I do not smell scents, I do not see colors, I do not hear the sounds, nor I have any purpose. It is the Nature that desires such objects as are liked; and it is the Nature that hates such objects as are disliked. Desire and dislike spring from Nature according to the upward and downward winds when the soul has entered animated bodies. Separated from them are others, in them are eternal settlements, the soul of all creatures, Yogee will see in the body. I live in that, that is why I am never attached to anything, by desire or by anger. Since I do not have any desire for anything, and do not have disliking for any evil, there is no spot on my nature. Although I do actions but its fruits or enjoyments are not attached to them. There is a dialog between an Adhwaryu and a Yati in this connection, you hear it, O lady. A Yati said to Adhwaryu seeing him sprinkling water on a sacrificial animal - "This is destruction of life." Adhwaryu said - "This goat will not be destroyed. This will earn Punya if the Vedic declarations are true. His all parts will meet different elements, and I who follows scripture will attach to no fault." Yati said - "If you are doing so good to this animal, then this sacrifice is for goat. What need you have for it? Let the relations of this goat give you permission for this. Take him to them and consult them. This will be all right only when you will have their approval. His life winds will be returned to their sources and only his inanimate body will remain here. This is what I think. Who will be satisfied with his body, which is like fuel, is the animal himself. Absence of cruelty is the foremost for all Devtaa - no slaughtering. If I say further, then I would say that many kinds of wrong actions can be done by you. Always abstain from cruelty - we apply this to what is directly perceptible, not what is beyond direct perception." The Adhwaryu aid - "You enjoy objects of seeing, tasting, smelling etc through your Indriyaan. All those things, you think have life, but you don't abstain yourself taking these lives, while in reality you are engaged in slaughtering. There can be no movement without slaughtering. What do you think in this regard?" The Yati said - "The indestructible and the destructible constitute the double manifestation of the soul. While the indestructible is existed, and destructible is non-existent. The life-wind, the tongue, the mind, the quality of goodness, are all existent. The Aatmaa (soul) is above all these forms and hence is above duality and hope. Who is freed from all these existent objects, he surpasses all pairs of opposites. He does not expect for anything, he is thus released from his environment, he has no fear from anything any more.* *Note - Here the life-wind indicates the operation of several organs of action (nose, ear, eyes etc) - external worlds, and quality of passions, all kinds of pain etc - internal worlds. These, therefore, include the whole external and the internal worlds. He that is free from these operations of organs, is free from sins, because sins are destroyed by getting freedom from them, and knowledge is the means to get freedom from them. The Adhwaryu said - "O intelligent man, One should live with good people. You have opened my eyes. Now I will learn from you, because I believe that you are a Devtaa. I still say that I am not at fault because I was performing it by the aid of Mantra." *Note - "I have no fault" etc - I was doing this with the help of Mantra prescribed from ages past by wise men, but now you have opened my eyes, but I am not at fault for the actions performed in ignorance. The Braahman continued - "With this conclusion the Yati remained silent. The Adhwaryu also proceeded with the great sacrifice without any delusion. Braahman understand Emancipation which is exceedingly Subtle. They live according to the guidelines provided by Kshetragya who knows everything. Braahman further said - "There is another dialog cited in this regard between Kaartveerya Arjun and Ocean. There was great king named Arjun who had 1,000 arms. Once when he was wandering on the sea shore, he showered hundreds of arrows on the water. Ocean came folding his hands and said to him - "Please do not throw arrows on me, what shall I do to you? Your arrows have killed the animals who live inside me. Please protect them." Arjun said - "If there is any bowman equal or greater than me and can stand against me in the battlefield, tell me his name." Ocean said - "if you have heard the name of Rishi Jamadagni, his son is competent to duly receive you as his guest. Arjun proceeded with a great anger and came to Rishi's Aashram. He met Raam Himself. He started troubling him. Raam started destroying his army. Taking up His axe, He killed him. Seeing him killed his army ran towards Raam. Raam ascended his chariot, took His bow and killed all of them, but some escaped in forest. Who could not discharge their duties to their order they became Vrishal owing to inability to find Braahman. (Kshatriya always require Braahman to assist them in their acts. Since they could not find Braahman to assist them so their children became Vrishal or Shoodra.) In this way those people became Dravid, Aabheer, and Paundra. Then the sons born from Kshatriya's women through Braahman were also killed by Raam several times - 21 times. Then a Divine voice said to Raam - "O Raam, stop, what did you get after killing all of them? His ancestors also came to stop Him from killing, Raam said - "Don't stop me from killing." Pitar said - "Then do not slay these inferior Kshatriya. It is not proper for you to kill them being a Braahman." Pitar said - "There is an old history cited regarding this, and after hearing it you should do according to it. These was a great royal sage named Alark. He was a very high soul. He had won the whole earth. Sitting at the root of a tree, he thought, "After having conquered the mind one's conquest becomes permanent, so now I should try to shoot these arrows at my mind." The mind said - "O Alark, These arrows will not be able to pierce me through. They will pierce only your own vital parts and thet will cause you to die, so find out some other way to destroy me." Alark said - "My nose follows sweet perfumes, so I will shoot my arrows at my nose." The nose said - "They will not pierce me, they will pierce only your vital parts and that will cause you to die, so you look for some other way to destroy me." Then Alark said - "This tongue runs away after tasty things, I will shoot my arrows at my tongue." The tongue also replied the same. The same thing he said it to eyes, ears and skin and understanding, but he got the same answer from everyone. So he did Tap but failed to obtain control on each of the seven, he also failed to obtain anything better than Yog. Then setting his min on one object he sat perfectly still in Yog (First he did Hath Yog, later he did Raaj Yog. The first one frequently ends in the destruction of the person practicing it.) He could quickly slew all his senses only with one arrow. He sang, "Alas, We should have accomplished those acts which are external, we thirst for enjoyment, I have learned now that there is no happiness that is higher than Yog. So O Raam, You stop slaying these Kshatriya and practice penance." Hearing this Raam started doing Tap and attained the highest.
