Paandav in Dwait Van [3-23] Vaishampaayan Jee said - "After the chief of Dashaarh had left all Paandav rode on the chariot and proceeded in the Kaamyak Van. While they were going they distributed gold Nishk (golden coins of those times), cows and clothes to Braahman who were learned in Shikshaa, Mantra and Akshar. At that time 20 attendants were following them. Indrasenaa also followed [Paandav] in a chariot taking expensive clothes, jewelry, servants and maid servants. At that time Kurujaangal Braahman greeted them cheerfully. Yudhishthir also had a little talks with them, he was feeling as a father for them. They all were abusing Duryodhan for his this sordid act - "Fie on Shakuni, fie on Karn, where are you going leaving your such a beautiful palace built by Maya Daanav and Indraprasth?" Arjun said - "Wandering in the forest the King want to spread the good name of his enemies. You also tell other people you meet about our good." Hearing this the Braahman went away and Paandav also came back to their place." [3-24] Vaishampaayan Jee said - "O King, Yudhishthir said to his brothers - "We have to live in such forest for 12 years so search for a place which has lots of birds, deer, water and is comfortable place." Arjun said - "You have served many Rishi, Durvaasaa Naarad, Vyaas etc a lot, and you know everything what is good for us, so we will live there only wherever you will tell us to live. Here is the lake called Dwait Van, it seems good, if you like we can live here for 12 years, or do you think some place else?" Yudhishthir said - "What you have suggested is good, let us stay here for the next 12 years." Vaishampaayan Jee continued - "So they all went to Dwait Van and as they reached there, many Braahman and Mahaatmaa surrounded them. Many trees of Shaal, mangoes, palm, Madhook, Kadamb, Arjun etc were covered with flowers as it was the end of summer. Flocks of peacocks, Chakor, Kokilaa (Koel or Cuckoo) etc birds were flying around. They saw elephants also. The King got down and went on foot in the forest. Many Braahman came to see their King. All Paandav sat down under a flowering tree to take rest." [3-25] Vaishampaayan Jee said - "At last those princes could find a pleasant place to stay. Saraswatee River was flowing there. As they all sat there, Rishi Dhaumya started performing the sacred rites of Ishti and Paitreya for Paandav. There came an old Rishi Maarkandeya in that forest. Yudhhishthir welcomed him and paid his respects to him. Maarkandeya Muni smiled seeing them in the forest. Yudhishthir asked him - "While all these Muni are sad to see us in the forest, and you are smiling?" Maarkandeya Jee said - "My child, I too am sorry for you, and I am not smiling to mock you, but just I recollected Raam, the son Dasharath, devoted to truth. Even that Raam also had to live in forest, along with Lakshman, to obey His father. When I saw Him, he was living on Rishyamook Hill. Raam was like Indra and he also had to live in forest, that is why one should never say "I am very mighty". King Naabhaag, Bhageerath and others have attained good regions because of observing the Truth. King of Kaashee and Karoosh were called "mad dog" after renouncing their riches. Even Sapt Rishi are shining in the sky because of observing the rules prescribed by the Creator himself. That is why no one should act unrighteous. O Son of Prithaa, You have surpassed all creatures in Truth, and virtue and behavior, your fame is shining like Sun. After passing the time in forest you will take your kingdom from Kaurav and will shine again." After having said this to Paandav the Rishi went in northern direction." Yudhishthir Draupadee Dialog on Anger [3-26] While Paandav were living in Dwait Van, one day Rishi Bak of Dalvya family came there and addressed Yudhishthir - "Almost all great Rishi are gathered here with you. Listen to me what I say to you. As fire consumes the forest with the help of wind, in the same Brahm Power along with Kshatriya Power consumes all enemies. That is why one should never think of without Braahman. Virochan's son King Bali also followed such activities which led him to salvation, that is why he was never short of wealth and his all desires were fulfilled. Earth bows to that King who rules the earth with the help of a Braahman, when Bali did not obey the Braahman, he lost it. Both the Braahman's sight and a Kshatriya's might are incomparable. When they combine the whole earth is in their hands." Vaishampaayan Jee said - "After this all Braahman worshipped Bak. And then Vyaas, Naarad, Jaamdagnya, Prithushravaa, Indradyumn, Bhakaakee, Kritchetaa, Sahastrapat, Karnshravaa, Munjaa, Lavanaashwa, Kashyap, Harit, Sthoolkarn, Agniveshya, Shaunak, Kritvaak, Suvakan, Brihadaashwa, Vibhaavasu, Oordhwaretaa, Vrishmitra, Suhotra and Hotravaahan, all Rishi adored Yudhishthir." [3-27] Vaishampaayan Jee said - "Once, Krishnaa said to Yudhishthir - "The son of Dhritraashtra is not thinking good about us. He has sent us in the forest clad in deer skin. When you were coming to woods, only four people - Duryodhan, Shakuni, Karn and Dushaasan were not at all sorry. You have brought up in so much luxury and how are you living now? Where was that ivory seat and where is this Kush Aasan? I feel sorry for you. How were you living in palaces and how are you living now, my heard does not find peace in such condition. Why are you not angry seeing all this? Bheem who can kill everybody without any help is just waiting for the fulfillment of your promise. Arjun who is worshipped equally by Daanav and Devtaa, don't you feel bad seeing him in this condition? It is said that there is no Kshatriya who does not become angry, but you are never angry. Who does not show his anger at the appropriate time, he is never regarded by other creatures. That is why you do not forgive your enemy, in the same way who does not forgive when the time comes, he also becomes unpopular." [3-28] Draupadee continued - "In this regard, a story of Prahlaad and his grandson Bali is worth listening. Once Bali asked his grandfather - "O Sire, Is forgiveness better or the energy and might? You are virtuous, please tell me about this." Prahlaad said - "Listen, O My child, Neither might nor forgiveness is meritorious all the time. Who always forgives suffers, servants, enemies and even strangers always disregards him, because they can always take advantage of his forgiveness. And disregard is worse than death. Everyone tries to speak harsh words with him, because he knows that he will be forgiven. Normally people are fond of pleasures, so if they don't get punishment for their faults, they contract many other vices too. These are the demerits of being always forgiving nature. Now you listen to the demerits of being always not forgiving. Who are always angry, they are surrounded by darkness, they are always inflicted, various kinds of punishment keep them away from their own people. people hate him, he loses his wealth and regard. People are always afraid of him. That is why people should be neither always forgiving nor always be punishing. Who uses them at appropriate occasions is happy in this world. Now I tell you
those occasions on which a person should forgive, listen to me carefully - Draupadee continued - "That is why I say that the time has come to show your might on Kaurav. The just king is he who uses both forgiveness and might at the appropriate times." [3-29] Yudhishthir said - "O Draupadee, Anger lowers the man as well as prospers the man. It is the root of all prosperity and adversity. Who is always angry with other people he reaps adversity for himself. Anger destroys the world, then how can I can be angry with anybody? The angry man commits sin, the angry man acts in adverse ways. There is nothing which an angry man cannot do and there is nothing which an angry man cannot say. The angry man does not know what should he do or what he should not, what should he say and what he should not. An angry man can kill a man who should not be killed and can worship who should be killed. Because of these faults wise men control their anger. So how can like us be angry at any one? If any man becomes angry with any man who is mightier than him self, he destroys himself, that is why O Daughter of Drupad, weak people should control their anger. Even the wise people do not give way to their anger. That is why my anger doesn't rise. It is said that all weak people should should suppress their anger, even wise people should suppress their anger whether strong or weak. Who shows his anger are called foolish. Forgiving Kashyap says - "Forgiveness is virtue; forgiveness is sacrifice, forgiveness is the Ved, forgiveness is the Shruti. He that knows this is capable of forgiving everything. Forgiveness is Brahmaa; forgiveness is truth; forgiveness is stored ascetic merit; forgiveness protects the ascetic merit of the future; forgiveness is asceticism; forgiveness is holiness; and by forgiveness is it that the universe is held together..... Forgiveness is the might of the mighty; forgiveness is sacrifice; forgiveness is quiet of mind. How, O Krishnaa, can one like us abandon forgiveness, which is such, and in which are established Brahm, and truth, and wisdom and the worlds? The man of wisdom should ever forgive, for when he is capable of forgiving everything, he attains to Brahm...." These are the verses which Kashyap has sung. Our grandfather the son of Shaantanu will worship peace, Vyaas Jee will worship peace, Krishn will worship peace, both Drone our preceptor and Vidur also called Kshatree talk about peace; Kripaa and Sanjaya also preach peace; and Somdatt, Yuyutsu and Drone's son Ashwatthaamaa everyone speaks of peace. Seeing them, I think Dhritraashtra will return our kingdom. But if he doesn't he will bear the consequences. Suyodhan doesn't deserve the kingdom, that is why he does not forgive, I deserve the kingdom, that is why I am of forgiving nature. Continued on Next Page
