Yagya (Sacrifice)

Yagya (Sacrifice)
See also  Yagya

Why to Perform Yagya
In the Bhagvad Geetaa, Krishn, the Supreme Being advises that "Actions do not bind one when he performs actions as acts of sacrifice. Therefore, act and perform thy duty without attachment and in a spirit of sacrifice (Yagna Bhaav)." Worship is a form of sacrifice. Worship the powers of Nature (the minor deities), and they in return will nourish thee. Through this synergy, you can attain the highest goal. Fostered by sacrifice (Yagya, Havan, Hom), the deities of nature will, unasked bestow on all of us the enjoyments we desire. Those who enjoy the gifts of the gods without offering sacrifice in return to Him are thieves....... The virtuous, who partake the food that remains after the sacrifice has been offered to God, are freed from all sins; but the selfish who eat alone (without sharing their food with others) are in fact feeding on sins.

All beings are products of food, food is nourished by rain and rain comes as a result of performing sacrifices; and sacrifice is the noblest of action...... In sacrificial action, the Supreme Spirit is consciously present..... (Geetaa, 3:9-15) Those who long for success in actions on earth, offer sacrifices to the deities and success comes quickly from such actions (Geetaa, 4:12). The act of offering is Supreme Brahm and the offering is itself Brahman; the one who offers is Brahman and the sacrificial fire into which the offering is made is also Brahm. Some offer sacrifice to the Devtaa (minor deities) ......Some perform sacrifices using material objects.... Partaking of the residues of sacrifice, the food of immortality, they come to Brahm..... Various sacrifices are enunciated by Ved.

Why Should We Do Yagya?
The crux verse here is Geetaa, 3-9
Humans are bound by their actions except when they are performed for the sake of Yagya.
Thus, Arjuna, do your work, free from attachments, in the spirit of Yagya.

Here Yagya means any act of self-dedication or service above self. It is also an act of worship; so the message is do your work as worship! Thjis action is not for Hom or other kinds of Yagya (fire sacrifice) etc. Life itself is Yagya. When we lead life self-lessly then we are not bound to it. That is called leading the life in the spirit of Yagya. This Yajgy is obviously different from Kaameshti Yagya prescribed in Ved. In Purush Sookt we read Saptaasyaasan Parishayah, trissapta samidhaa kritaah, deva yadyajnam tanvaanaah. abhdnan purusham pashum!
Seven outer limits (Pancha Bhoot and day and night) - these are the perimeters within which we lead our life, burning 21 Samidhaa (Panch Karm Indriyaan, Panch Gyaan Indriyaan, Panch Praan, Manas, Buddhi, Chitta, Ahankaar, Dharm and Dadharm)! That is the Yagya of living being (Jeevan Yagya)

Actions do not bind one when he performs actions as acts of sacrifice. Therefore, act and perform your duty without attachment and in a spirit of sacrifice (Yagya Bhaav). We can go on quoting verses from the Geetaa. There has to be a limit. Whatever has been stated above is more than adequate to justify sacrifices.
