Shuk Dev
Shuk Dev Jee is the son of
Maharshi Ved Vyaas Jee. Ved Vyaas
Jee had three sons in Kuru family, two from the widows of
Vichitraveerya (Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa)
and one from Ambikaa's maid - Dhritraashtra,
Paandu and
Vidur respectively. He had Shuk Dev from a parrot that is why his name was
Shuk Dev. As he was born, he left the home and set off to do penance. Vyaas Jee
got very sad seeing this, he ran after him crying - "O Dear Son, Where are
you going?"
Shuk Dev Jee was born when
Vyaas Jee was churning (Manthan) with Arani in presence of Ghritaachee
Parrot ...
Shuk Dev As a Great Gyaanee
Shuk Dev Jee was a lifelong bachelor and a great Gyaanee (knowledgeable and learned)
Rishi. He did not make any difference between a man and a woman. Once some girls were
taking bath in a pond without clothes. By chance Shuk Dev Jee passed from there,
but seeing him those girls did not show any reaction. They continued to take bath
as before. After a while Ved Vyaas Jee passed from there, seeing him they immediately
came out of the pond and covered themselves with their clothes. Ved Vyaas Jee asked
them - "Why did you wear clothes seeing me, while you continued taking bath when
you saw my son Shuk Dev?" They replied - "Because Shuk Dev does not make
any difference between a man and a woman, while you make." Hearing this reply from
the girls, Ved Vyaas Jee got very embarrassed and went his way. So such was the greatness
of the Gyaan of Shuk Dev Jee.
Shuk Dev Told Bhaagvat Kathaa to Pareekshit
According to Bhaagvat Puraan,
Shuk Dev Jee told the Bhaagvat Kathaa to King Pareekshit when he decided to listen
to it after hearing that Takshak Naag would
bite him on the 7th day from that day. Mahaabhaarat does not give such reference
anywhere.
