Dhundhu |
Dhundhu Dhundhu Daitya's story comes in Bhaagvat Puraan, 9/3 and Mahaabhaarat, G-4-Van/38. In Mahaabhaarat, Maarkandeya Jee tells his story to Yudhishthir on his request. Dhundhu was the son of Madhu and Kaitabh. Once he did Tapasyaa and pleased Brahmaa Jee and asked a boon from him that he should not be killed by any Devtaa, Daanav, Asur, Gandharv or Naag etc. Brahmaa Jee granted him this boon and went away. Now he was invincible. He remembered Vishnu who killed his father, so he won Devtaa including Vishnu. Then he came to the sea of sand named Ujjalak and started doing Tapsyaa going underground with the intention of destroying Tri-Lok. Once Uttank also did Tapasyaa and when Hari appeared before him, he asked Him to kill Dhundhu Daitya. He said - "There will be a king named Brihadaashwa in Ikshwaaku famuly, he will kill him. So Brihadaashwa was born in Ikshwaaku family. Brihadaashwa had the son named Kuvalaashwa and he had 21,000 handsome brave mighty sons. Brihadaashwa was very happy and satisfied seeing his son Kuvalaashwa so he decided to crown Kuvalaashwa on the throne and he himself prepared to go to forest. Seeing this Uttank went to him and requested not to go to forest and kill Dhundhu first. Uttank told Brihadaashwa that Dhundhu was doing this Tapasyaa by lying in the sand. He used to get up every year, took breath which trembled the Earth continually for 7 days, and because of that Uaatank could not stay in his Aashram. In olden days Vishnu granted him a boon that whoever king will slay this Asur himself will be more than Vishnu Himself. Since he had that energy, he could kill him, otherwise nobody will be able to kill him even in 100 years. But Brihadaashwa had made up his maind, so he said to him - "My able son Kuvalaashwa will fulfill your wish, but I have to go to forest." and after he instructed his son Kuvalaashwa to kill the Daitya, he went to forest. Kuvalaashwa went to the place where Dhundhu was doing Tapasyaa along with his 21,000 sons. Seeing him going to kill Dhudhu, Vishnu filled him with His own energy, and Indra rained so that the ground is soft. His son dug the land there for 7 days, then only they could see his body. They roused him by pricking with sharp weapons. As he rose he started spitting fire from his mouth. This ire burnt Kuvalaashwa's all sons. At this Kuvalaashwa threw water from his body which extinguished the fire. Then he released Brahm Astra and killed the Asur. Only three sons of Kuvalaashwa - Dridhaashwa, Kapilaashwa and Bhadraashwa, were saved from Dhundhu's fire. So Ikshwaaku Vansh continued only by these three sons.
