Eightfold or Sarvasht Varg System of Prediction
Ashtak Varg is a very
important tool to fix good Muhoort for commencement of all activities as
well as to judge the auspicious nature of a transit. Mr. C S Patel has
written a complete treatise on Ashtak Varg published by Sagar Publications,
Delhi. In ch 72, verses 30 and 31 of BPHS, Paraashar teaches us :
1. If a sign (house) contains more auspicious Bindu in Sarvaashtak Varg it
should be considered auspicious for the commencement of all auspicious
activities.
2. If a planet is transiting any sign and it contains more auspicious
points in Sarvaashtak Varg and in own Varg, it will yield to auspicious
results. The general rules of transit will not be applicable. You may
refer Prashna Marga ch 32 in this regard also.
6th House is for enemies
2nd, 5th, 10th and 11th Houses are for finance. Add the points of these
Houses, take the average, and that percent of finance is of that native
------------------------------------------------
In Ashtak Varg chart only 8
elements, that are necessary for the chart, are given here. We will start
with the Sun and will find out the benefic dots in the Ashtak Varg of that
planet. For this purpose, you must have a blank chart beside the above
chart in order to mark the benefic dots contributed by the Sun and other
significators in the Ashtak Varg of the Sun.
In which houses the Sun is
favorable from himself and so contributes favorable dots. He produces
benefic results on the houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 counted from his
position at birth. Now put a short vertical line, not a dot, for the sake
of clearness, in the 1st House - Capricorn, and 2nd Aquarius, 4th Aries,
7th Cancer, 8th Leo, 9th Virgo, 10th Libra and 11th Scorpio. What does
this mean? That the above house will be good while he transits them. In
the same manner you will have to find out for other significators also.
Count separately the same
places from the natal positions of Mars and Saturn. You see that Mars is
in Aries at birth. So count 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 from Aries, and
put another short vertical line in each of these places. Repeat this
process for Saturn from his position Scorpio. Thus we have disposed of
three significators.
--Now take up Jupiter's
contribution. The Sun is good in the 5th, 6th, 9th and 11th positions from
Jupiter's place. Where is Jupiter? in Virgo. So put another mark in these
places counted from Jupiter's sign (Virgo) - in Capricorn, Aquarius,
Taurus and Cancer.
--The Sun is good in 6th, 7th and 12th places from Venus, so mark Gemini,
Cancer and Sagittarius.
--He is good in 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses from
Mercury, so mark Aquarius, Aries, Taurus, Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio.
--He is good in 3rd, 6th, 10th, And 11th houses from the Moon so mark
Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
--Lastly the Sun is good in places 3rd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 11th and 12th
houses from the Asc. So mark the signs Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius,
Capricorn and Aquarius.
Now look at the chart below
of Sun's Ashtak Varg. In this chart you will see only one house without a
single benefit dot.

--Only those houses which
contain more than 4 dots can be considered auspicious. In this chart
Taurus and Aquarius contain 6 dots each
--Cancer, Leo Sagittarius and Capricorn contain 5 dots each.
--Though Aquarius is the 12th house from the Moon, yet the Sun's transit
will not give as much good results as in the houses containing 6 dots.
--Similarly Leo, which is the 6th house from the Moon, should give good
results, as it contains 5 benefic dots in it and belongs to himself (it is
Sun's own sign).
--Similar effects should be considered in exaltation, friendly house,
inimical house, or debilitation etc factors.
--Although Aries is the Exaltation sign for the Sun, but it contains only
3 dots. This means it has 5 malefic dots, but only 3 benefic dots. So the
transitional effects must be very bad.
So remember the general principle -
--A bad house in transit will not be so bad, if it contains more than 4
benefic dots.
--Even though a Raashi may contain many benefic dots, still the effects
will not be so good, if the particular house happens to be the planet's
Debilitated, inimical or Upachaya house.
--If a house doesn't have any benefic dot in a planet's Ashtak Varg, the
effect is that the native is like to lose life, when the planet transits
that house.
The effect of benefic dots commencing with 1 to 8 are in order:--
(1 dot) destruction,
(2 dots) loss,
(3 & 4 dots) fear,
(5 dots) gain of wealth,
(6 dots) acquisition of a damsel, (7 dots)
prosperity, (8 Dots) kingship or high govt position.
Who is Benefic and When
Now you might be interested
to know when these effects will be experienced. Some theories have already
been given (see "Who is Benefic When" on
Transits page). Another principle is that :--
--a planet produces good or bad results when it has advanced exactly the
same degrees in the transit, as it had advanced at birth time.
Next we should work out the Ashtak Varg for Moon --
--Moon is good in 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th houses from the Sun. So
put a mark in Pisces, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Libra and Scorpio.
--Moon is good in 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 11th houses from herself. So put a
mark in Pisces, Taurus, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Capricorn.
--Moon is good in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th from Mars. Mars
is in Aries at birth. So put a mark in Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo,
Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius.
--Moon is good in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th from
Mercury. So put Marks in Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Gemini,
Cancer, Virgo and Libra.
--Moon is good in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th places from
Jupiter. So put the mark in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries,
Gemini and Cancer.
--Moon is good in 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, and 11th houses from Venus. So put
the mark in Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio.
--Moon is good in 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 11th houses from Saturn. So mark
Capricorn, Pisces, Aries and Virgo.
--Moon is good in 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses from the Asc. So mark
Taurus Leo, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
The result is this:--

11 11 |
111 1 |
11 11 |
111 11 |
11 |
11 11 |
1111 11 |
So Moon's Ashtak Varg
benefic dots are 49. Only three Raashi contain more than 4 dots - they
are Pisces and Virgo with 6 dots each and Sagittarius with 5 dots.
You know that a planet is
beneficial when it transits certain houses counted from the Moon's
position at birth - which in addition happens to be his own, friendly and
Exaltation houses. So now the Moon's transit is good in 1, 3, 6, 7, 10,
and 11th houses from his natal position. In the chart, although the 1st
house contains 6 dots, so the transit through that house must be excellent.
The 3rd house which also ought to give good results as it his Exaltation
house, cannot be good here, because it contains only 4 dots. The same
situation applies to the 6th house. The 7th and 10th houses are good.
In the same way make this
Ashtak Varg chart for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn should
also be made.
--Mars is good in 3, 5, 6, 10, 11 from the Sun. So mark Pisces, Taurus,
Gemini Libra and Scorpio.
--Mars is good in 3, 6, 11 from the Moon. So mark Taurus, Leo, and Capricorn.
--Mars is good in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 from himself. So mark Aries,
Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius.
--Mars is good in 3, 5, 6 and 11 places from Mercury. So mark Aquarius,
Aries, Taurus, and Libra.
--Mars is good in 6, 10, 11, 12 from Jupiter. So mark Aquarius, Gemini,
Cancer and Leo.
--Mars is good in 6, 8, 11, 12 from Venus. So mark these houses from Capricorn.
--Mars is good in 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 from Saturn. So mark these house
beginning from Scorpio.
--Mars is good in 1, 3, 6, 10 and 11 from Lagna. So mark these house
beginning from Pisces.
In this chart his own
Raashi and his Exaltation do not contain many benefic dots - total
points 39.
Now we will make the chart for Mercury.
--Mercury is good in 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12 from himself. So mark
the houses beginning from Sagittarius.
--Mercury is good in 5, 6, 9, 11, 12 from the Sun. So mark Raashis
beginning from Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio and Sagittarius.
--Mercury is good in 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 from the Moon. So mark the house
beginning from Pisces.
--Mercury is good in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 from Mars and Saturn. So
mark the house from Aries and Scorpio respectively.
[pages were not seen here]
In Saturn's chart, there are 39 total benefic dots; and only two Raashis
possess 6 dots each - Leo and Capricorn. And these happen to be 6th and
11th from the natal Moon. Although the 3rd place is also said to be good
but it contains only 3 benefic dots, so it cannot produce any good effects.
The 6th house, Leo, although belonging to enemy, must produce good effects
as it contains 6 dots. The 11th house, besides being his own house, contains
6 dots also, so it must produce excellent effects.
Thus you have learnt the
Ashtak Varga method. All the 7 planets' points are 337, which is called
"Samudaaya Ashtak Varga". The total of benefic points of individual
planets is called "Bhinna Ashtak Varga".
Hope for Fewer Benefic Points
So if any Raashi contains
the benefic dots fewer than 5, it cannot produce good results - still a
distinction is to be made here. Because a bad effect cannot continue for a
long time, there must be silver line of happiness somewhere. How to find
out that in a house?
Let us suppose in an Ashtak
Varg, one Raashi contains only 1 benefic dot. Apparently, this dot must
have been contribute by one of the 8 significators.

[some pages are missing]
You can find out the
auspicious and prosperous periods by adding the figures to the houses
occupied by the benefics and multiplying the same by 7, and dividing the
product by 27. In this case the quotient will give the age at which the
native will be happy and fortunate. This should be done with the figures
of Sarvaashtak chart. In that chart, you see Pisces containing 23 benefic
dots, Virgo 26, Sagittarius 25, which make an aggregation of 74 dots. This
number multiplied by 7 and the product divided by 27, gives 20th year. So
that is the year of prosperity.
But this is not all, you
repeat this process for in the Ashtak Varg Chart of each of natural
benefics and add them up all. Another point is that the native will be
happy when :--
--the total number of the dots in the 11th house will exceed from the 10th
house dots; and
--the figure in the 12th is less than that of 11th. and lastly
--the figure in the Lagna is greater than that of 12th house.
In our example, the Lagna
has 23 dots; 12th house 28, 11th house 33, and 10th house 25. Here all the
condition are met except the last one, so we can say that the native will
be spend-thrift, yet he will have plenty of money to enjoy.
In the Sarvaashtak Varg
chart you make 3 divisions of 4 Raashi, each commencing from Pisces.
These three divisions represent three stages of life. The part of life
which has maximum number of dots will be the happiest one. In our example
chart, the three groups have respectively 110, 113, 114 dots; hence we
will conclude that the native's last period of life will be the happiest
one.
According to another view,
the grouping must be done not from the Pisces, but with the one that
happens to be the 12th from the Lagna Raashi. According to this you will
have to begin with Aquarius in this example chart. According to this
calculation the numbers are 112, 113, 112 respectively.
