through good and auspicious by himself will produce evil effects
particularly at the end of his Dashaa.
[BPHS Ch. 47, Sl. 4]

The Dashaa effects of Raahu and Ketu, who are always retrograde, will
always be realized in the reverse order.

Description of Raahu and Ketu
[BPHS, Ch. 3, Sl. 30]
Description of Raahu and Ketu. Raahu has smoky appearance with a blue mix
physique. He resides in forests and is horrible. He is windy in temperament
and is intelligent. Ketu is akin to Raahu.
[Phala Deepika, Ch. 2, Sl. 16]
The places belonging to Raahu and Ketu are the anthills, the dark holes of
serpents and the Southwestern quarter.
[Phala Deepika, Ch. 2, Sl. 22]
A Buddhist, a snake catcher, a donkey, a wolf, a camel, a serpent or snake, mosquitoes,
a bug, insects, an owl and a place of darkness are signified by Raahu and Ketu.
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 2, Sl. 33-35]
Raahu is blue colored. He has a huge body. He is of a low caste. He has got
skin disease. He is irreligious. He suffers from hiccough. He speaks falsehood.
He is cunning, a leper devoid of intelligence and defames others. The eyes of
Ketu are reddish with a fierce look. He has a venomous tongue. His body is
elevated. He wears arms and is an outcaste. His body is of smoky color. He is
always inhaling smoke (smoking). He has a body marked with bruises. He is lean
and brutal by nature. The substance assigned to Raahu is lead and his clothes
are old and worn out. An earthen pot and garments of variegated colors belong
to Ketu.
[Phala Deepika, Ch. 15, Sl. 15+16]
Raahu signifies paternal grandfather and Ketu maternal grandfather.
[Brithu Sutras, Ch. 8: Raahu and Ketu-the Shadowy Planets]
Raahu and Ketu are called shadowy planets by our ancients. They are not
substantial heavenly bodies with an observable body shape or mass like the
Sun, Moon and other planets. Hindu mythology has in its characteristic way
symbolized these two parts of a single body.
According to a Pauraanik story after
churning of the ocean (
Saagar Manthan) came out a divine elephant, a horse, a physician, the Goddess
of wealth and Amrit or immortality. About the distribution of Amrit there was a
serious dispute amongst the Dev and Asur. The Supreme Lord (Vishnu) assuming the
form of an alluring Mohinee, took charge of distributing the Amrita with the consent
of both Devtaa and Asur. She so distributed the Amrit that all of it was consumed by
Devtaa but one among the Asur had stealthily joined the ranks of Devtaa and got a share
of Amrit but was discovered and exposed by the Sun and the Moon. The Supreme Lord cut
the Asur in two pieces but as he had taken Amrit both the severed parts remained alive
though separated. The head got the name of 'Raahu' and the body became the tail and is
known as 'Ketu'.
This made Raahu and Ketu eternal enemies of the Sun and the Moon. Periodically they
succeed in swallowing the Sun and the Moon (This is during eclipses) but they escape
as they are immortal. The fact that has since been universally accepted is that Raahu
Ketu are celestial points on the Zodiac with regulated movement and orbit and they
have a distinct and predictable influence in horoscopes.
The motion of these points which is always retrograde, can be calculated as accurately
as the position of the Sun or the Moon, through owing to their being without substance,
this cannot be verified by visual observation. Westerners have named Raahu and Ketu as
Dragon's Head and Dragon's Tail respectively. Caput and Cauda are the other names given
to them by Westerners.
Note
To the observer on earth, the paths of the Sun and the Moon appear to be
two great circles projected on the celestial sphere. The Sun's path, the
solar ecliptic, makes a complete revolution in one year. At the same time,
the Moon's circular path is completed in about one month. Every month the
Moon will overtake the Sun which moves more slowly. This is called new
Moon or in Sanskrit, Amaavasyaa. Usually the Moon's path passes above or
below the Sun's path and no eclipse occurs. But, periodically the Moon
overtakes the Sun at the place where their paths intersect. This causes
the Sun or the Moon to be hidden from the Earth's view and is thus called
a solar or lunar eclipse. These places of intersection are the north and
south lunar nodes, or as they are referred to in Hindu mythology, Raahu
and Ketu. Therefore, in the symbolic language of mythology, Raahu and Ketu
are said to "swallow up" the Sun and the Moon. The ancient Hindu
observers of the sky were aware of the cause of the solar and lunar eclipses
and so described the process in the language of metaphor.
To understand how these imaginary points are accurately located and their
movements are calculated we have to consider the apparent paths in the
heavens of the two planets the Sun and the Moon, that is, the paths along
which the Sun and the Moon appear to an observer on earth, to rotate. The
Sun appears to move along an ellipse of which Earth is a focus. The plane
of this ellipse is inclined to the terrestrial Equator at an angle of 23
degrees. The Moon, as the satellite of the Earth moves round it and its path
is also elliptical with the Earth as a focus, and plane of this orbit is
inclined to the Equator at an angle of 28 degrees, so that the planes of the
orbits of the Sun and the Moon appear to the observer on Earth to be inclined
to each other at an angle of 5 degrees. The two points at which the orbit of
the Moon cuts the orbit of the Sun are called nodes, and they are exactly 180
degrees apart. The point of intersection formed when the Moon's motion is from
South to North, is said to be ascending node and named Raahu, and the point of
intersection formed when the Moon's motion is from north to south is called the
descending node or Ketu.
It has been observed that the nodes have a retrograde movement in the
Zodiac at the rate of 19 degrees 20 minutes per year. Raahu and Ketu are
said to stay in a sign for about 18 months. Raahu and Ketu indicate one
born in a low caste; one who may have intrigue with girls; is one whose
thoughts and actions will be evil. One will resort to outcastes and low
born as well as in bred people.
There is quite a controversy amongst the ancients about the signs owned by
Raahu and Ketu and signs in which they are exalted and debilitated. For
example, according to Uttar Kalamrita an ancient classic on Hindu Predictive
Astrology, Raahu is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, vice versa
of Ketu. This work also assigns the sign Aquarius as owned by Raahu and Scorpio
as owned by Ketu. Mooltrikona of Raahu has been fixed as Gemini and Mooltrikona
of Ketu has been given as Virgo. The "Sanket Nidhi", another recognized
work allot Gemini as the exaltation sign of Raahu, Virgo as his own sign and
Sagittarius as the exaltation sign of Ketu and Pisces as its own Sign.
It is also believed that Raahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars.
The Gem of Raahu is "Gomed (Lahasuniyaa)" and that of Ketu is
"Cat's Eye".
Dignities of Raahu and Ketu
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 42]
Four Raashi from Kumbh and four Raashis\ from Vrischik belong to Raahu and
Ketu, respectively. If Raahu and Ketu are in any one of the aforesaid
Rashis, the Dasha will be productive of beneficial results. [Note: Raahu -
four Raashi from Aquarius is Gemini, Ketu - four Raashi from Scorpio is
Aries.]
[BPHS Ch. 47, Sl. 34-35]
In order to clarify the effects of the Dashaa of Raahu, I shall first
mention the exaltation and debilitation Rashis of Raahu and Ketu. The
exaltation Raashi of Raahu is Vrishabh. The exaltation Raashi of Ketu is
Vrishchik. The Mool Trikon of Raahu and Ketu are Mithun and Dhanu. The
own Raashi of Raahu and Ketu are Kumbh and Vrishchik. Some sages have
expressed the view, that Kanyaa is the own Raashi of Raahu and Meen is the
own Rashi of Ketu. [Beneficial Results of Raahu in Taurus, Aquarius and
Gemini, and of Ketu in Scorpio and Sagittarius]
General Effects of Raahu and Ketu
[BPHS, Ch. 34, Sl. 16+17]
Raahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects, as due to their Yuti with a
Bhaav Lord, or, as due to the Bhaav they occupy. If Raahu and/or Ketu are in
Kendra, receiving a Drishti from, or in association with the Lord of a Kon,
or of a Kendra, it will become Yog Kaarak.
[Phaala Deepika, Ch. 20, Sl. 39]
Raahu will affect the planet with whom he is associated. That planet
through good and auspicious by himself will produce evil effects
particularly at the end of his Dashaa.
[Phaala Deepika, Ch. 2, Sl. 26]
Raahu, Ketu and Gulika are enemies of the Sun and will cause distress to
the body and the soul.
[BPHS Ch. 47, Sl. 4]
If the Graha is retrograde, these effects would be in the reverse order.
The Dashaa effects of Raahu and Ketu, who are always retrograde, will
always be realized in the reverse order.
[BPHS Ch. 48, Sl. 20]
Raahu and Ketu give favorable results in Sahaja, Ari and Laabh.
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 64]
There will be pilgrimage to holy places in the Dasha of that Rashi, from
which Raahu is in 10th House. [or say in its 4th House Raashi]
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 51]
The natural characteristics of the Bhaav, occupied by Raahu, are harmed at
the commencement of the Dashaa. For example, if such a Bhaav is Dhan,
there will be loss of wealth.
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 24]
There will be loss, due to the displeasure of the king and danger there
from in the Antar-Dasha of the Raashi, that is occupied by Soorya, Mangal,
Raahu and Shani.
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 46-47]
There will be loss of everything, imprisonment, death, exile from the
country and great distress at the end of the Dashaa of Raahu. The above
effects will definitely be realized, if there are malefics in the 5th and
the 9th from Raahu. Beneficial and adverse effects should be predicted in
this manner.
[BPHS Ch. 50, Sl. 60]
The Dashaa of that Raashi will cause distress to children, exile to a
foreign country and continuous disturbances in life, if Raahu and Ketu are
in the Trikon to the Raashi.
[Phala Deepika Ch. 14, Sl. 9]
The diseases and troubles attributed to Raahu are as follows : (1) Heart
diseases, (2) theart of burning, (3) leprosy, (4) abarration of mind, (4)
diseases caused by poisoning, (5) pain in the legs or injury, (6) distress
from wife and children or distress caused on their account, (7) trouble from
goblins, serpents or enemies.
Ketu is the cause of (1) trouble through dispute with Brahmans and Kshatriyas.
The troubles due to Gulikaa are (1) fear from seeing dead bodies (2) poison,
(3) bodily pain, (4) sorrow due to the death of a near relation, (5) fear
from evil spirits.
[Phaala Deepika Ch. 19, Sl. 14-17, 21, 25]
There will be, during the Dashaa of Raahu, danger from the king, thief,
poison, fire and weapons, distress to children mental tension, loss of
kinsmen, humiliation from low caste people, loss of reputation, failure
and losses in all ventures and demotion in status.
Raahu's Dashaa will be full of auspicious effects if Raahu be associated
with a benefic or be posited in an auspicious house. The native will enjoy
the splendor like that of a king. He will achieve success in all his ventures
and will live happily in his house. He will accumulate lasting wealth and his
fame will spread far and wide on the Earth.
It is the view of those learned in Astrology that Raahu in Virgo, Pisces or
Scorpio will give the person concerned during his Dashaa, honor and happiness,
lordship of lands, conveyances and servants. All these will, however, be liable
to be lost at the conclusion of the Dashaa.
Effects like danger from enemies, thieves, wrath of the king, fear of
injury from weapon, diseases caused by heat, a stigma to family of the
native, fear from fire, deportation from the native place as a result of
some serious accusation.
General effects like becoming wicked in disposition, suffering from a
dangerous disease, destruction of wife and children of the native, fear or
danger from poison, distress or trouble from enemies, diseases of the eye
and heart, animosity with friends and servants working on agricultural land
and animosity with the king, will be experienced when the Dashaa of Raahu
be in operation.
Notes -
Raahu and Ketu are shadowy planets. They are said to give effects according
to the houses they occupy and according to the planets they are associated
with according to Lagna Parasari. That is, if Raahu or Ketu be posited in
Kendra or Trikona and be connected with the Lord of Kendra or Trikon, they
cause Yog which means they become Yog Kaarak. Raahu or Ketu will definitely
produce immensely good results when his Dashaa will be in operation. Lagna
Parasari goes to the extent of saying. This means that if Raahu and Ketu are
well placed (i.e. in the Lagna, the 5th or 9th) give the effects of a Yog
Kaarak planet in the Antar-Dashaa of Yog Kaarak irrespective of the fact whether
they are connected or not with a Yog Kaarak planet.
During the Dashaa of Ketu, the native will suffer from sorrow and
confusion caused by females, trouble from the rich and loss of wealth.
He will do injustice to others. He will be banished from his country
(native place). He will suffer from dental trouble, pain in the legs
and phlegmatic troubles.
[Phala Deepika Ch. 20, Sl. 52]
If Raahu and Ketu occupy a Kendra or Trikon they become Yog Kaarak if
they get connected with the Lord of Kendra or Trikon.
If Raahu or Ketu should occupy the Sign of a benefic Planet which is not an inauspicious
house and are not connected with any planet, they produce good effects in their Antar-Dashaa.
If Raahu and Ketu are not connected with any planet and are posited in
an auspicious house (Kendra or Trikon), they will produce good effects
during their Dashaa and the Antar-Dashaa of a Yog Kaarak.

Comments. We would recommend to the readers to also study the effects of
Raahu and Ketu in favorable and unfavorable positions, which are given in
sufficient detail in Kalidaas's famous classic 'Uttar Kaalaamrit'. In view
of the controversy about the role of Raahu and Ketu who are only shadowy
planets there is a strong school of thought that they should not be considered
as owners of any signs. According to this view Raahu and Ketu act as agents
to the planets to which they are conjoined. If they are not conjoined with
any planet, they give the results of the planet who aspects them. Only when
they are neither conjoined with, nor aspected by any planet, they represent
the Lord of the House in which they are posited.
Uttar Kaalaamrit gives following further information about Raahu and Ketu:
(1) Raahu and Ketu - if endowed with strength, produce effects similar to
the planet owning an inauspicious house and in whose house they are posited
or with whom they are conjoined. The Lords of Kendra and Kon houses, if not
conjoined with the two nodes, produces beneficial results. The effects will
be contrary, if they be other node these two nodes in spite of their malefic
nature becoming benefic by virtue of their position in certain houses or
association with certain planets.
(2) If one of the two nodes and the Lord of a Trikon be posited in the
9th or 10th, or if one of them be in the 9th or the other in the 10th or
vice versa, the Yog will cause prosperity to the native. Even a conjunction
of either of these with the lord of a Trikon will prove beneficial. In the
above circumstances the paras of these two nodes as well as these of the
planets conjoined with them will prove happy. If there be a planet who is
inauspicious associated by a sum of Sambandh (relationship) with either of
the nodes, then the Bhukti of the Yog Kaarak planet will prove adverse.
(3) The two planet - Raahu and Ketu become auspicious when they occupy a
Trikon or Kendra position or when they are associated with the Lord of
that particular Kendra or Kon House in which they are posited. They also
prove beneficial when they conjoin with the Lords of any Kendra or Kon House.
If the Lord of the 9th were to own the 8th or 12th House as well, or if
the Lord of the 9th and the 10th in the above circumstances were to conjoin
with the Lords of the 9th or the 12th, then the auspiciousness of the Yoga
is lost.

[Phala Deepika, Ch. 9, Sl. 20]
20. When a planet happens to be retrograde in motion, he will produce the
same effect as if he is posited in exaltation sign, even if he may be in
his enemy's sign or in the sign of his debilitation. A planet who is
Vargottam produces effects as if he is in his own sign.
Retrogression changes a planet's nature indeed, it leads to unexpected and
surprising results which are unusual and uncommon. A retrograde planet in
exaltation must be the best what can happen - retrogression is very
auspicious, exaltation is best placement... applies for benefic and malefic
as well...

Basic Definitions:
1. Raahu or Ketu is in a Kendra House (the 4th, 7th or 10th House) and conjoined
or aspected by the Lord of a Trikon House (5th or 9th house) or when
2. Raahu or Ketu is in a Trikon House (5 or 9th house) and conjoined or aspected
by the Lord of a Kendra house (4th, 7th or 10th House).
It is possible that case 1 occurs twice in a chart (simply because when Raahu is in
a Kendra house and Ketu will be in a Kendra house too), but with case 2 that is not
possible.
