Tid Bits

Here are the explanations of some concepts given by (by Kanan Iyenger, In Jyotish Group, Oct 7, 2013 - prof.kannan.iyenger@gmail.com)
One must show enough politeness and humility for a healthy learning; instead of mud-slinging. Learn as a Shishya or a humble seeker or a well-mannered scholar who wishes to seek to enrich his knowledge or who is suffering, needy yet devoted Jaatak; but an arrogant person can never learn.

Raaj Yog in Jyotish
The Ashtaang Yog Vidhaan as laid by Maharshi Patanjali is called Raaj Yog Maarg or the royal path.

We can be a Yogee and Bhogee both at the same time. When we are Yogee we are in Krishn Paksha and when we are Bhogee we are in Shukla Paksha. When we are Yogee we are in Nivritt Avasthaa; and when we are Bhogee we are in a Pravritt Avasthaa. Stith-pragya remains in Nivritti-Pravritti Avasthaa both at the same time; and thus is a Jeevan-Mukt. He remains A-Lipta (untouched) by Bandhan (bondages). Guru Dattaatreya was a Yogee and a Bhogee at the same time. He drank liquor and had a beautiful maiden in his lap; which made many disciples to consider him Path-Bhrasht (way-ward); and many left him. Guru Dattaatreya laughed heartily, and one sincere disciple who remained realized that the maiden was Mahaa Lakshmee. Parameshwar Sadaa Shiv is a Yogee and Bhogee to an extent that we worship his Bhogee Mudraa of copulation in a Ling form. The Bhogee, if is in Bandhan, so are all spiritualists in Bandhan. One is desirous of material pleasure, and the other desirous of non-material pleasure. It is only when you have love then you get out of both these Bandhan, and become a Jeevan-Mukt. When you are a Jeevan-Mukt, Bhog Avasthaa and Yog Avasthaa both are same for you, as you remain A-Lipt.

As far as Jyotish is concerned, Raaj Yog means the royal combination when Maataa Lakshmee and Pitaa Vishnu exist together. Maataa Lakshmee denotes blessing and Pitaa Vishnu denotes efforts or Karm, so Raaj Yog indicates the fulfillment of an effort by being blessed with appropriate results for that efforts.

(1) Raaj Yog Graha Yuti in a Jaatak Chakra is for all dimensions of human existence including spirituality (Moksh Purushaarth).

(2) The term Raa-j is to be clearly understood with its implications. Often it is understood to be something related to enjoying pleasures and Bhog Samriddhi or material abundance or prosperity.

(3) Raa is related to Soorya, fire, Agni. Ja is related to "one who is created, born" like Ja-nma, Ja-nanee, Dwi-ja, Pra-jaa etc. And obviously you need a mother (or Moon) for that. So clearly the word Raaj indicates Sun who sustains all that is born like a father, along with Mother Moon who sustains or support those who are born. So we have a trigger or energy or effort coming from the Sun, and support or sustenance or nourishment coming from the Moon to administer their Pra-jaa or people. So, for a Raajaa or a king to rule his Prajaa or people, he not only needs "efforts or executive authority" but also "sustenance or support". This sustenance is called as "Lakshmee". A government cannot exert its executive authority without tax, so a Raajaa or Sun cannot exert his Kingly authority without treasury or Lakshmee.

In other words, wherever the authority and support merges, that is, wherever Naaraayan and Lakshmee merge together is said to create a situation or condition like a King. And this gives you a rulership over that area. In other words, in that particular area or aspect or dimension of your life, your disposition will be like a King; with authority and support; so that none can challenge you or prevent you in achieving anything in that area. Thus a king in essence is like Shree Lakshmee-Naaraayan or vice versa.

In Jaatak Chakra, the Kendra denote Naaraayan and Trikon denote Lakshmee. So wherever you have the Yuti of Kendreyshaa and Trikoneyshaa in any particular Bhaav, there is said to be "Raaj Yog" or conjunction for king-like condition - authority and support.

Having said this, it is easy to understand that not all kings are worthy or capable or influential. For example, The King of Hastinaapur was formidable and could not be challenged because he had a Param-Prataapee (ever-valorous) Bheeshm Pitaamaha as Senaapati, Dronaachaarya, and Mahaatmaa Vidur as his advisora or Amaatyaachaarya or Mahaa-Mantree etc etc. Hence, how far the king will be successful depends on his Amaatyaachaarya (Mahaa-Mantri) or Senaapati and so on.

So also in a Jaatak Chakra, how far the Raaj Yog will be effective depends on other Kaarak supporting it. For effecting prediction, our fundamentals need to be very strong, instead of simply quoting scriptures and copy-pasting. The concepts must be clearly understood. Instead of looking at "what is written", we must ponder "why it is written" in the scriptures, to be really able to understand the scriptures in the true perspective, as you must know that scriptures are often written in a symbolic or cryptic pattern so that only genuine student can learn or understand them; for others it is just a merry-go-round.

Spiritual Success
Spirituality is called Moksh Maarg in Sanskrit. It is one and the last of the four Purushaarth (fundamental purposes of a human birth). It is to be understood that being spiritual is different from being religious.

Chaturth, Ashtam and Dwaadash Bhaav (4th, 8th, and 12th) of a Jaatak Chakra indicates this Moksh Karm (spiritual activities).
Chaturth Bhaav gives Gati, Ashtam Bhaav gives Tapasyaa and Dwaadash Bhaav gives Mukti. So to sum up we have, Gati - Tapasyaa - Moksh = Spirituality.

Now the D1 Chakra pertains to physical body; and physical body has nothing to do with Moksh, so we never look at D1 for spirituality.
But Moksh means freedom from bondage and illusion. So the question is, who is bonded? And from where is this illusion coming from? Aatmaa is never bonded nor it is under illusion.
The shadow version of Aatmaa (Soorya) is called Ahankaar (Shaneeshwar)
Ahankaar is the identification of Self with something else other than its true nature or form; the identity of Aatmaa with name and form (Naam-Roop) is the bondage which causes it to feel that "I am this name and form" or "I am the doer", or "I want this". So who is suffering here? It is the Ahankaar which is suffering and experiencing the pleasure and pain through Manas (Chandra).

Ahankaar is borne out of A-Vidyaa or ignorance. Aatm Gyaan (Self-Realization) is the state which destroys this ignorance; which happens through a special grace-light from Eeshwar (Arul-perum-jyoti); and this grace-light is ever-compassionate (thani-perum-karunai); and this magnificent white compassionate grace-light is called Guru. Guru is a special form of Eeshwar who is compassionate and destroys our A-Vidyaa or ignorance.

Shaneeshwar is the Kaarak for Ahankaar. As long as the Aatmaa has Ahankaar, it keeps taking birth and re-birth to experience various desires or tasks related to the Ahankaar. Ahankaar or Shaneeshwar exerts his existence separately from Aatmaa or Soorya; and obviously does not like to be friendly with Aatmaa, as Shaneeshwar is Shatru of Soorya; so is Ahankaar is Shatru of Aatmaa.

With the existence of Ahankaar comes the debit and credit of Anubhav which is stored in Chitta and keeps manifesting from lifetime to lifetime. Shaneeshwar is the ultimate King of this Sansaar (world) and not the Soorya as is popularly believed. Anyone who is under Ahankaar is under the influence of Shaneeshwar.

Let me reveal the secret that the one single Devtaa who makes anyone really spiritual is Shaneeshwar; and hence he is exalted in Naisargik Saptam Bhaav in Tulaa Raashi because that is the point from where Nivritti Maarg starts or spirituality starts.

So you may ask a question why does Shaneeshwar brings the Jeevaatmaa into this Sansaar and then subsequently turn him around spiritual? A very valid question. And the answer is Shaneeshwar is a practical Aachaarya who teaches by experience. He will not lecture on what fire is. He will first put your hand in fire, make it burn, then apply medicine, and then teach you how to get out of this messy fire once for all, so that the metamorphosis in you is permanent. Since he employs a very tough methods of teaching, so no one likes him. He is like a commando-trainer. If ever we must feel grateful to, then it is Shaneeshwar. He is truly Eeshwar. The ultimate agenda of Shaneeshwar is to free you from Ahankaar; but he indirectly does it with the help of Mahaa-Tapaswee Shukra. Ketu and Shukra help Shaneeshwar in his spiritual agenda. And hence when Shaneeshwar-Shukra-Ketu are mutually aspecting or supporting then it is called Tapaswee Yog.

Now, Shaneeshwar is the true administrator of Kaal, almost mercilessly and un-emotionally; and hence has his Guru is Kaal Bhairav.

Ganesh is even beyond Kaal Bhairav, and hence Ganesh is truly Kaalaateet (beyond Kaal), and hence Shaneeshwar cannot influence Ganesh, the true knower of Kaal and hence the foremost Jyotishaachaarya.

The following points must be checked for spiritual saadhana:

1. D20 Vinshaansh
2. Influence on 4th, 8th and 12th Bhaav in D20.
3. Position of Aatm Kaarak in D20.
4. The Tapaswee Yog conferred by Shaneeshwar-Shukra-Ketu in D20 and D60; and their level of influence on 4th, 8th and 12th Bhaav.
5. If Shaneeshwar-Shukra-Ketu influences anyone’s 4th, 8th or 12th Bhaav very strongly specially in D20, D24, D60 or even D9 or D1; there is a strong chance of the Jaatak being spiritual and triggered on Moksh Maarg.
------------------------------------------

1. When our Maharshi used the word Graha, they did not mean it to be planets. They meant it to be significant celestial or astronomical entities that can influence/eclipse the human existence. In that sense, Raahu and Ketu are not planets, but still they are Graha as they influence human existence on Earth plane.

Now comes the next question, how does these entities influence us? We are so far away. The answer is, Yathaa Brahmaandam tathaa pindam (As it exists in universe, so does it exist in human body). For example, the place near Allahabad (Prayaag) and Vaaraanasee (Kaashee), where there is Trivenee Sangam, is actually the place in your Bhrikuti - between your eye-brows where your Aagyaa Chakra is located.

The Kumbha Melaa Snaan is actually focusing your consciousness in Aagyaa Chakra during some auspicious time. The Aagyaa Chakra is Trivenee Sangam because Idaa, Pingalaa, and Sushumnaa merge there.

But the beauty is that if we bath in Trivenee Sangam outside on Earth plane, we get the same effect of meditation on Aagyaa inside. So there is a one-to-one correspondence or functional mapping between external world and internal world.

(2) Now coming to Adhik Maas. I feel Adhik Maas* has been introduced by human beings in order to tally solar and lunar year. But the question is why should we tally them in the first place? Let solar year be in its place; and lunar year be in its own place. Do you compare your little finger and middle finger, and then add an extra finger to make them tally at the same height? The Adhik Maas concept is the product of the futile effort to tally two different entities towards the same point.

* Adhik Maas has nothing to do with tallying solar and lunar years. It is part and parcel of the same Vaidik lunar year. When you name lunar
months following the Vaidik method Adhik Maas (extra month) come automatically, and so is Kshaya Maas (lost months).

Actually this problem comes because we want one single civil calendar, and hence we want to jam-pack all stuff into it, lunar, solar, Gregorian etc; and if they are not stuffing-up well, then cut them, tailor them by adding, or subtracting etc to suit or stuffing-process.

My proposition is, why don't you learn to live with them as separate entities? Instead of stuffing them into a single entity of civil calendar?

What I mean is we have to learn to live with say 2 or 3 calendars and refer them for different purposes. And any civil day we can mention as, today's date is so and so as per calendar 1 and ; so and so date as per calendar 2. This way we don't meddle with tailoring like Adhik Maas. For example, for spiritual purposes we can use lunar calendars and for mundane purposes we can use solar calendars, and for official governmental purposes we can use Gregorian calendars etc etc.

I had been a professor of maths and was teaching Cartesian system and polar system or rectangular co-ordinate system and Circular/cylindrical coordinate system. Now students of maths know this that the same point in space can be represented by the co-ordinates from these two viz- Cartesian system coordinates and polar coordinates. But Cartesian coordinates are linear and polar co-ordinates are having an angle parameter. So tell me, if I try to tally the angle parameter of polar system with linear parameter of Cartesian system, will I be ever successful in that till end of the ages? Never. So we have to learn to treat Cartesian coordinates separately and polar coordinates separately, without trying to compare or tally them, and with full awareness that they both indicate the same point in the space without any ambiguity. The same logic holds true for solar calendar and lunar calendar; much similar to Cartesian system and polar system.

By adding Adhik Maas, we are actually mixing two different frames of reference or system, and paying dearly for it.
