Vinshottaree Dashaa is the most used and 'most appropriate' (BPHS) Dashaa system in our era, it certainly belongs to the most important planetary periods cycles. Most astrologers mainly - or only - work with this one Dashaa cycle - but it is very important to include other cycles - at least Moola and Kaalchakra Dashaa - as well.

Vinshottaree means '120' - 120 years are the possible maximum span of life of a human being in Kali Yug. It is very interesting that modern natural scientists are confirming this; this means with particular measures prolongation of our life up to 120 years is - theoretically - possible.

Vinshottaree Dashaa is part of the three most important Dashaa - Mool, Vinshottari and Kaal Chakra Dashaa - and relatively time sensitive: One minute in birth time variation results in approximately one week in Mahaa Dashaa cycle.

Vinshottaree Dashaa is based on Moon's Nakshatra placement - reflect upon the Moon and its signification: "Moon is the mind." Vinshottaree shows the direction of your mind, and what is going on in your mind, is manifesting in life (mind can be conscious and unconscious as we know from psychology!) . If you think of marriage, it is far more probable that you will marry, if you think of profession, it is far more probable that you will look for a profession - if not, the probability of marriage and profession is decreased (but not impossible, there is always the possibility of sudden events).

Vinshottaree shows your mind and his evolution, development, how your mind, mentality and consciousness creates your world and manifests particular experiences.

Vinshottaree Dashaa is highly reliable (but be aware of correct birth time and correct Ayanaansh use - correct Ayanaansh is slightly different from standard value, between 0 deg 1 min and 0 deg 2 min - which can result up to three weeks difference in timing).

Calculation and Sequence of Mahaa Dashaa
Starting point is the placement of the natal Moon in Nakshatra, Mahaa Dashaa (main planetary period) starts with the Lord of this Nakshatra. The missing fraction of the traversed Moon in his sojourn through the Nakshatra is calculated in order to get the exact period length of the very first Mahaa Dashaa.

Calculation and Sequence of Antar-Dashaa
Antar-Dashaa of Mahaa Dashaa start with the Mahaa Dashaa Lord and continue with the normal sequence of planets : Ketu - Venus - Sun - Moon - Mars - Raahu - Jupiter - Saturn - Mercury. For example, taking Venus as Mahaa Dashaa Lord, the Antar-Dashaa sequence starts with Venus as well, followed by Sun AD, then Moon AD and so on.

Interpretation of Vinshottaree Dashaa
Vinshottaree Dashaa is based on the Nakshatra placement of natal Moon and the natural sequence of Nakshatra Lords. As 'Udu Dashaa' Nakshatra the 27 lunar mansions - comprising of 13°20' in the zodiac - are of utmost importance for understanding Vinshottaree Dashaa in the proper way.

Each planet Lords over three Nakshatra, as there are nine main planets, this results in 27 Nakshatra. The following table shows which planets lords which Nakshatra with the Mahaa Dashaa span of them:

How to interpret Vinshottaree Dashaa?
Let us take an example, Raahu Mahaa Dashaa (MD):
1. First look must go at the natural significations (Kaarak) of Raahu.

2.. Second glance goes to the "functional significations" of Raahu: in which Bhaav his Mool Trikon (Gemini) and his own house (Aquarius) is posited? Which Bhaav Raahu is ruling (Mool Trikon Raashi is more important)? Including Raahu as Chara Kaarak: Mars and Saturn have the same longitude (10°), therefore 8 Chara Kaarak Scheme is advisable and Raahu becomes Maatri Kaarak.

3. Raahu MD activates the "Nakshatra" where Raahu is posited in (e.g. Bharanee, Mrigshiraa, Uttaraa Bhaadrapad). Yuti(s) with and Drishti on Raahu are activated as well.

4. Raahu MD activates the "Raashi and Bhaav of the Nakshatra" in which he is posited. Yutis and Drishtis on this Raashi are activated as well.

5. Raahu MD activates the "Nakshatras of which Raahu is Lord of": Aardraa, Swaati, Shatabhishaa. Planets posited in this Nakshatras are activated as well, with their Yutis and Drishtis. Nakshatra Lattas are to be considered as well.

6a. Raahu MD activates all "Ansh" in which Raahu is placed in: Raahu in Horaa, Drekkan, Chathurtaansh, Saptaansh, Ashtaansha, Navaansh, Dashaansh, Dwaadashaansh, Kaalaansh/ Shodashaansh, Vinshansh, Chaturvinshaansh, Trinshaansh, Khavedaamnsh, Akshavedaansh, Shashtiyaansh, Nava-Navaansh, (Dwaadashaansh- Navaansh). Of particular importance are the Ansh which are divisions of the Nakshatra (13°20'): Navaansh (3°20', equal to a Nakshatra Pad), Bhaansh / Nakshatraansh (1°06', division of a Nakshatra by 12 and dividing a Navaansh by 3) and Akshavedaansh (0°45', division of a Nakshatra by 20 and dividing a Navaansh by 5). Nava-Navaansh (divisions of a Navaansh by 9) and perhaps even Dwaadashaansh-Navaansh (division of a Navaansh by 12) are important as well.

6b. Raahu MD as well activates Gemini (his Mool Trikon Raashi) and Aquarius (his own Raashi) in all Ansh, with all Graha posited in them.

9. Position of Dashaa Lord to "various references": Moon, Lagna, Arudha Lagna, Sun, Horaa Lagna, Ghatee Lagna and (perhaps) Bhaav Lagna

Bhaav are structured in
"Kendra" (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house),
"Trikon" (1st, 5th, 9th house),
"Dusthaan" (6th, 8th, 12th house),
"Upachaya (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th house) and
"Maarak (2nd, 7th house).

--Trikon are the houses of Lakshmee, of fortune and provide more auspicious periods.
--Kendra are the houses of Vishnu, of sustaining, the backbone of our horoscope and our life and provide normally auspicious periods (but not as auspicious at the best houses, Trikon, in a chart).
--Dusthaan are Shiva's domain, providing lot of problems and obstacles in our life.
--Upachaya are houses of development, therefore indicating some life struggle and need for development, therefore providing problems and challenges as well.
--Maarak are "houses of death" and can lead to endings.

Look, what kind of Lordship a Dashaa Planet obtains: Is he Lord of a Trikon (Lakshmee) House - then auspicious.
Is he Lord of a Dusthaan, or Upachaya - then more difficult.
(To repeat this, there are of course lot of exceptions due to very individual constellations in a chart!)

This is to be done from various references: MD/AD/PD Lord, Moon, Lagna, Arudha Lagna are the most important references, then Sun, Hora Lagna, Ghatee Lagna and Bhaav or Graha Arudhaa.
