Kaal Dashaa

Note: Kaal and Chakra Dashaa are two independent Dashaa systems and have nothing to do with Kaal Chakra Dashaa.

Kaal Dashaa
[BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 44-49]
5 Ghatikaa before the sight of the semi-disk of the setting Soorya and 5 Ghatikaa after that and 5 Ghatikaa before and after the rising of Soorya, that is 10 Ghatikaa in the evening and 10 Ghatikaa in the morning, respectively. The total period of both these Sandhyaa (twilight) is said to be 20 Ghatikaa.

The 20 Ghatikaa of the night have been given the name Poorn and the 20 Ghatikaa of the day have been given the name Mugdha. The Sandhyaa at the time of sunrise is called Khand and the Sandhyaa at the time of sunset is said to be Sudhaa. Both of these Sandhyaa are of 10 Ghatikaa each.

If the birth is in Poorn, or Mugdha, its past Ghatikaa should be multiplied by 2 and the product should be divided by 15. The figure so arrived at should be converted into years, months etc. By multiplying it by the serial number of Soorya and other Graha in their normal order, we will get the Kaal Dashaa of these Graha.

If the birth is during Sandhyaa, then its past Ghatikaa should be multiplied by 4 and the product divided by 15. The figure so arrived at in terms of years, months etc. should be multiplied by the serial number of Soorya and the other Grahaa to get the Kaal Dashaa of all the nine Grahaa.

5 Ghatikaa are equivalent to 5 x 24 min = 2 hours.
1 day = 24 hours = 60 Ghatikaa = 3600 Vighatikaa
1 hour = 60 minutes = 2.5 Ghatikaa = 150 Vighatikaa
1 minute = 60 seconds = 2.5 Vighatikaa
1 Ghatikaa = 24 minutes
1 Vighatikaa = 24 seconds

Chakra Dashaa
[BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 50-51]
If the birth is at night, the Dashaa will commence from Lagna Raashi.
If the birth is during the day, the Dashaa will start from the Raashi, in which the Lord of Lagna is placed.
If the birth is during Sandhyaa, the Dashaa will begin from the Raashi of the second Bhaav.

The Dashaa of each Raashi is 10 years. As it is the Dashaa system of the 12 Raashi in the Zodiac, it has been named, as Chakra Dashaa.

Sandhyaa is the time span when Sun is ascending (we can track this verifying if Sun is posited in the first Bhaav in Chalit Chakra) or descending (Sun in 7th Bhaav in Chalit Chakra). The time span of Sandhyaa is 5 Ghatikaa or two hours.

This Dashaa isn't included in any software, nevertheless Paraashar mentions in at a very early chapter in BPHS and therefore we can assume that it is a very fundamental and important Dashaa - in fact he rejects all other Raashi Dashaa systems ('not appropriate') except Varnad, Niryana Shool and Chakra Dashaa (this includes most known and used 'Chara Dashaa' as well!). He really denotes Chakra Dashaa as '*the* (!) Dashaa system of the 12 Raashi in the Zodiac'! (Varnad and Niraayan Shool Dashaa are 'Aayur-Dashaa' indicating longevity, death or at least severe problems.)

Each Raashi period of 10 years leads to a total sum of 120 years, the maximum life span of human beings in Kali Yug, like in Vinshottaree Dashaa.

Lagna is related to night births, Lagna Lord to day births. This is logical because planets are carrying activities with regard to the Raashi/Bhaav they are lording, they are the active energies and principles. Sandhyaa is a time of transition and transformation: The Sun is wandering from day into night (from the upper half - the bright half of the day above the Ascendant - into the lower half - the dark half of the day below the ascendant). Starting Maha-Dashaas for natives born during Sandhyaa time are started from 2nd Bhaav/Lagna.

Note: This principle could be referred to two conditional Dashaas as well, Shodashottaree Dashaa and Shat Trinsh Sama Dashaa. I do not use them - even if applicable - when the native is born during Sandhyaa.

Interpretation: Due to Paraashara's highest estimation of Chakra Dashaa it must be a 'Phalit Dashaa', a Dashaa suitable and applicable for all themes and topics.

Kaal Chakra Dashaa
All three Dashaa have in common that they are 'natural' Dashaa in a way, very fundamental Dashaa. They are 'background planetary cycles', framing all other Dashaa - especially Mool, Vinshottaree, Kaal Chakra and Conditional Dashaa - in a way.

Kaal Dashaa
Kaal Mahaa Dashaa cycle is tracking the natural sequence of planets we know from the week days sequence:

Sunday - The Sun (1st Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Monday - Moon (2nd Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Tuesday - Mars (3rd Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Wednesday - Mercury (4th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Thursday - Jupiter (5th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Friday - Venus (6th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Saturday - Saturn (7th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Raahu (8th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Ketu (9th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)

Antar-Dashaa in Kaal Mahaa Dashaa - as usual - start with the Mahaa Dashaa Lord and then continue the normal given sequence. After a full sequence of all planets the Mahaa Dashaa cycle starts again (with The Sun).

Interpretation: Kaal Dashaa shows the natural progress of time and planetary energies in your life - it is the energetic background (Mool is the root, the fundament). Therefore Kaal Dashaa is an important Dashaa - it is tracking the natural sequence of time in your life, therefore it provides the background, the framing of it.

Look primarily at the natural significations of planets in Kaal Dashaa and only secondarily at the placement of the Dashaa Lords in Raashi (with its Ansh) and Bhaav. Another planetary period cycle (e.g. Mool or Vinshottaree Dashaa) coinciding with Kaal Dashaa period increases the probability of events related to this particular period with all its significations.
